3/11-3/15
Reminders:
 Learn the map—we will have the map quiz this Thursday, 3/14!!
 Be ready for the Ancient Europe Test—Thursday, 3/29!
 Don’t forget to review your notes and vocabulary nightly!
 We will have two vocabulary quizzes—one on Greece and one on Rome—you should be
ready for a vocab quiz on Greece next Monday.
Monday 3/11: Essential Question for Discussion: How do the Greek city-states of Athens and
Sparta compare?
Reading in Text:
 Chapter 5.2 pages 127-133
 Take notes paying attention to developments related to SPICE themes and vocabulary
o “Rule and Order” will go under the political theme
o Create a separate set of notes for Athens and Sparta so you can compare the different
ways they developed socially and politically
o Then add to your political notes a general overview of the three wars with Persia and
their consequences especially concerning the creation of the Delian League
Tuesday 3/12: Essential Question for Discussion: What were the major cultural achievements of
the Greek city-states (Athens really)?
Reading in Text:
 Chapter 5.3 pages 134-141
o These notes will be mostly be cultural (art and architecture, drama and history)
o You will have some political notes on Pericles and the Peloponnesian War!
o Then back to culture when the reading discusses the Athenian philosophers—have a
good idea what each of the philosophers believed, wrote or influenced
o Don’t forget to look at the pictures on pages 140-141
Wednesday 3/13: Essential Question for Discussion: What were the major achievements of the
Hellenistic (Alexander’s) Empire?
Reading in Text:
 Chapter 5 sections 4 and 5 pages 142-149
 Take a new set of SPICE notes on Alexander’s Hellenistic Empire.
o Pay special attention to the themes where you see big changes political, cultural and
economic
o Some areas stay the same like social and religion!!
o The Greeks in general were the thinkers not the doers—they have a bunch of cultural
achievements but not many technological advancements.
Thursday 3/14: Map Quiz—Europe
If you prepare….this should be a grade helper!!!
Friday 3/15: Essay Writing—you will write your second comparison essay today in class—make sure
you review before you come to class. You should also take a careful look at the last essay you wrote
and figure out what you did wrong—SEE ME if you don’t understand what you did wrong. Thoroughly
read the example essay (written by one of your peers).
