THE ANATOMICAL FOOTY SHOW Name: ____________________ Core Class: ________________ Teacher: __________________ 1 Unit Overview o This Unit will run for 5 weeks (10 lessons) o There will be a mix of theory and practical lessons o There are two assessment tasks in this unit: - Anatomy Recall Test You will be required to know the muscles and bones (taught in class, however revision will be required) - Aussie Rules skill test See the last page of your workbook This unit is full of fun and varied lessons, so give it everything you have and you’ll reap the rewards! 2 Aussie Rules Skills This is a crazy Australian mixture of football, rugby and basketball where you can kick, bounce, catch or punch a ball. Sometimes it's so mad it seems like there are no rules at all, but it's an awesome game. You score points by getting the egg-shaped ball between four posts at the ends of an oval shaped field. Each team has 18 players on each team. 3 The Rules Scoring To score a goal – 6 points: The ball must be kicked by the attacking team between the goal posts across the goal line. To score a behind – 1 point: The ball is kicked, handballed, bounces or is carried across the goal line between the goal post and behind the post by either team, or The ball is kicked across the goal line between the goal posts by the defending team. Did you know…that in Australia 650,373 people were playing Aussie Rules last year! That is half the population of Auckland! 4 THE MAJOR RULES: The major rules for Australian rules football are as follows: Marking A mark is awarded when a player catches the ball on the full from another player’s kick and the ball has travelled more than 10 metres. After a mark, a player can either take a kick or handpass. No one is allowed to tackle the player unless they play on (run off). Throwing Players can only punch, handpass or kick. Throwing the ball or dropping the ball when they are tackled are both illegal. Holding the ball There are two types of holding the ball: Holding the ball when a player is tackled – the player must either attempt to kick or handpass the ball straight away or they are holding the ball, and a free kick is given to the tackler Holding the ball when a player is running with the ball – the player must bounce it or touch it on the ground every 10 metres. Out on the full It is illegal to kick the ball over the boundary line on the full. The penalty is a free kick to the opposition. Tackling Tripping, grabbing around the neck or shoulders and pushing in the back are illegal tackles. A player may only tackle another player between the shoulders and waist. (However, we do not adopt this rule during ‘The Anatomical Footy Show’ at Springs). 5 Warriors whiz kid Shaun Johnson was nearly lost to AFL when he attracted the interest of scouts in 2006. By Peter Badel and Mike Colman The Daily Telegraph September 29, 2011 Super talent ... Johnson could have been playing for the Swans, but decided to stick with rugby league. Tagged the next Benji Marshall, rookie halfback Johnson will attempt to steer the Warriors to their first premiership when he goes head-to-head with Manly sensation Daly CherryEvans in the grand final. But the 21-year-old, one of New Zealand sport's hottest prospects, could easily be starring for Sydney Swans. The Daily Telegraph can reveal Johnson played Australian Rules at 16 and appeared on the AFL's radar when he was named New Zealand's best player in 2006 at an International Youth tournament named after the legendary Ron Barassi. Speaking from the Johnson family home in Whangaparaoa, New Zealand, his dad said: "Shaun really liked the game. Playing in the AFL was a definite option for him. 6 "He was named the most promising player of that tournament and we were told by the other coaches at the carnival if any of the Kiwi kids would make it professionally (in the AFL), it would be Shaun. "We actually went on a tour of the Sydney Swans headquarters. "We met their heavy hitters and went through their gymnasium with the New Zealand under-16 team. "In the end, we thought unless we moved to Aussie, an AFL career wasn't going to happen for him. "Then the Warriors showed interest, which meant Shaun could stay at home." While Johnson has received rave reviews for his attacking skills, his brief stint in Australian rules proved very beneficial. The boom playmaker honed his kicking game at Orewa College under his coach Craig Ashton, who played Australian football and has since been employed by the Warriors as kicking coach. It has been a remarkable ride to the grand final for Johnson. Just months ago he was battling a back injury as the Warriors experimented with their halves combinations. The quick-stepping No. 7 did not get his chance until round 13, but has been so composed coach Ivan Cleary could not resist his game-breaking brilliance. "The start of the season and was fairly frustrating," Johnson said. "It's every kid's dream to play NRL and at the time I wanted to do so, but I've had a taste of it now and I can safely say I probably wasn't ready." Much has been made of his battle with Cherry-Evans, but Johnson is more concerned with breaking the Warriors' 16-year premiership drought. "I know the sort of player Daly is but it's not really me against him," he said. "We're confident in our ability. We haven't won a grand final but as long as we keep our heads down and do the best we can, we'll be OK." Did you know? Humans and giraffes have the same number of bones in their necks i.e. 8? Giraffe neck vertebrae are just much, much longer! 7 THE HUMAN SKELETON Patella Mandible Sternum Tibia Ribs Pelvis Radius Clavicle Calcaneus Femur Fibula Vertebrae Cranium Phalanges(x2) Ulna Scapula Humerous EXTEND YOURSELF! The skeleton is divided into two sections, the Axial Skeleton and the Appendicular Skeleton. The Axial Skeleton is made up of core of the body (head, rubs, spine and sternum. The Appendicular Skeleton is all the bones in the limbs (arms, legs, hands and feet). THE MUSCULAR SYSTEM Colour the Axial Skeleton in red and the Appendicular Skeleton in blue! 8 THE SKELETAL MUSCLES Deltoid Soleus Quadriceps Triceps Rectus Abdonimus Biceps Hamstrings Trapezius Hip Flexors Gluteus Maximus Latissimus Dorsi Tibialis Anterior External Obliques Pectoralis Major Gastrocnemius EXTEND YOURSELF! There are two different types of muscles: voluntary and involuntary. Voluntary muscles are the muscles that you control (for instance, you send the message to your bicep to flex it). Involuntary muscles are muscles that do their job without being told (for instance, your heart beats without being told). What are some other involuntary muscles you can think of? ________________________________________________ _________ 9 THE FUNCTION OF MUSCLES (What they do) Fill in the blanks using the following words: pull, move, function, supporting, bones The muscles play a major role in _______________ the human skeleton and allowing it to _______________. Muscles hold together the _______________ and joints of the skeleton. They are the skeleton’s support system. They are placed over the joints of the body to allow them to _______________. The key point to remember is that muscles don’t push they only _______________. MOVEMENT OF THE JOINTS: FLEXION: The movement at the joint which makes the angle at the joint smaller. In order for the movement to happen at the knee, the hamstring flexes and PULLS the tibia and fibula towards the femur. EXTENSION: The movement at the joint which makes the angle at the joint larger. In order for the movement to happen, the quadriceps flexes and PULLS the tibia and fibula away from the femur. FLEXION to EXTENSION! 10 Muscles usually work in pairs! For example: When you bend at the knee, the hamstrings are the working muscles which are pulling the lower leg towards the upper leg. Therefore, the hamstring is called the AGONIST MUSCLE. At this time, the quadriceps are relaxing, allowing the movement to happen. They are called the ANTAGONIST MUSCLE. Therefore… When you straighten the knee, the quadriceps are the working muscles which are pulling the lower leg away from the upper leg. Therefore, the quadriceps are called the AGONIST MUSCLE. At this time, the hamstrings are relaxing, allowing the movement to happen. They are called the ANTAGONIST MUSCLE. 11 NOW YOU TRY IT…with the elbow! (Fill in the blanks with flexion, extension, bicep, tricep) When we bend our arm, the angle at the joint is getting smaller. Therefore the movement is _______________. The ___________ is pulling the radius and ulna towards the humerus. When we straighten our arm, the angle at the joint is getting bigger. Therefore the movement is _______________. The ____________ is pulling the radius and ulna away from the humerus. In the pictures below, identify the AGONIST and ANTAGONIST: MOVEMENT: EXTENSION OF THE ELBOW AGONIST MUSCLE: _____________ ANTAGONIST MUSCLE: __________ MOVEMENT: FLEXION OF THE ELBOW AGONIST MUSCLE: _____________ ANTAGONIST MUSCLE: __________ 12 ANATOMY RUNWAY! Two bounces and a hand pass to a person on the left. Two bounces and a hand pass to a person on the right. EXCELLENCE ACHIEVED Students get 2 chances to achieve. You must achieve both bounces to get to the next level. Students may touch the group with the ball instead of bouncing the ball, however they must do the whole course and can only achieve a maximum of achieved. Drop Punt Kick Assessment: (This drawing is half the turf split into fifths) ACHIEVED (male and female) MERIT (female) EXCELLENCE (female) MERIT (male) EXCELLENCE (male and female) X = Kicker 0 = Catcher The kicker stands at the far end of the court and tells the catcher to “run” across the target area. The kicker has to land a kick in the catcher’s arms or within a 2m radius from them in the zone. You cannot go to the next level without successfully completing the one prior (ie, you can’t just start at Excellence). 14 ANATOMICAL FOOTY SHOW ASSESSMENT RESULTS: Workbook/Test Not Achieved Incomplete workbook, scored less than on 22 on test Achieved Completed workbook, scored 23-29 on test Merit Completed workbook, scored 18-22 Excellence Excellent workbook, scored 38-45 Hand Pass Punt kick Unit Evaluation Which ‘bits’ did you enjoy during this anatomy and Aussie Rules unit?
