Spelling Practice Suggestions
Below are some suggestions for practicing spelling words. Each activity ends in
your child writing the spelling words. This is the best way to remember the words
so PLEASE do not skip this step. Spelling work does not need to be handed in.
Thanks in advance for all your support.
1. Write each spelling words 3 times. Fold a piece of paper so you have 3
columns.
2. Put your spelling words in complete sentences. Underline the spelling word.
Make sure you put spaces between your words, use capitals when needed, and
use punctuation.
3. Make your words with magnetic letters, felt letters, or scrabble tiles.
Write your words on paper.
4. Write your words in shaving cream. Write the words you made on paper.
5. Use your finger to spell out each word on a parent’s back. Have your parent
guess the word. Then it’s your turn to feel and spell. Write the words on
paper.
6. Make Rainbow Words. Write each word from beginning to end with a pencil
on paper. Trace the words from beginning to end with a crayon. Choose
three more colors and continue tracing the words from beginning to end.
7. Write your words in alphabetical order.
8. Write a riddle for each word.
9. Play a memory game. Make pairs of word cards. Flip them over and try to
match the pairs. Write the words you matched.
10. Take a practice test. Have your parent say each word. Write the words on
paper. (This activity is perfect for the night before your spelling day).
11. Cut out letters from old magazines, catalogs, or newspapers and glue on
paper to create spelling words. Write the words you made.
12. Practice writing your words on a dry erase board.
13. Write all your spelling words. Circle any little words hiding inside your
spelling words.
