Max. THE OUTLINE OF THE COURSE This lecture introduces you to the descriptive grammar of the English verb phrase (or VP) and the English noun phrase (or NP). We discuss what grammatical features are encoded on the English verb and the noun, and how these features determine the construction of the VP and the NP. We also study some of the variation that is observable within the internal structure of the English verb phrase and the noun phrase. WHAT YOU NEED FOR THE EXAM o What you primarily need are the VP reader and the NP readers. They are available in the library: Verb Phrase – The Reader “Vizsgaanyag“. pp 99-148 & 175-237. Available in the library. Noun Phrase – The Reader “Vizsgaanyag”. pp. 245-392. Available in the library. Compiled from Quirk et al. 1985. A Comprehensive Grammar of the English Language O You can also consult the lecture material, which is available for download on my webpage. Please note that these ppt presentations are not meant to be textbook chapters, and they mostly only contain the examples we discuss in the class with the full-time students, and some brief commentary on them. Therefore you do not need to study these presentations for the exam, but feel free to take a look at them if you want to see what we do in the lecture. You are also welcome to attend the lecture if you have the time, but this is again not compulsory since for you, this is a distance learning course. o You find the schedule of the lecture talks on the next page. Take this as an orientation for what we generally talk about at the lecture, but concentrate on the readers, which are the only compulsory material that you need for the exam. o The exam contains 4 questions on the grammar of the English VP and the NP, and you need to write down the answers to these questions. o Please feel free to contact me with any questions and inquiries in email or in any of my office hours.
