Place Value, Rounding and BEDMAS
Place Value is the term used to describe a specific numeral in a number. Examples of whole
number place values are; “ones”, “tens”, “hundreds”, “thousands”
Examples of place values that are less than a whole (1) are: “tenths” “hundredths”,
“thousandths”.
Rounding is making large, detailed numbers close to a desired, manageable place value. For
example, the number 3.142857142857 is a large detailed number that can be rounded to the
nearest “hundredth” to create the number 3.14.
Rounding is simply picking a place value you wish to round to, identifying that number, looking
to the number to the right of that number and if that number is 4 or less, your place value
number stays the same.
If the number to the right is 5 or more, your place value number changes up by one.
BEDMAS is an acronymn that is used to tells us the order in which we solve a mathmatic
equation (order of operations)
The tendency is to solve a problem as we read, from left to right. Unfortunately, Math is
not English. Math requires us to solve in a particular order.
Your Turn…
Give the place value of the digit “3” in each number. (ones, tens, hundreds, thousands,
tenths, hundredths, thousandths)

On a separate piece of paper solve the following questions using BEDMAS. You MUST write
out the equation and then work through at least TWO steps.
21.
(5 + 2) x 2 – 6 = y
26.
(18 – 12) x 4 – 3 x 3 = y
22.
16 – 4 – 5 x 2 = y
27.
(3 + 2 x 4) x 2 – 1 = y
23.
5 x 5 – 2(3 + 4) = y
28.
(17 – 3) x 2 – (9 + 7) = y
24.
(4 x 6 – 2) – 2 = y
29.
3(9 – 7) + 2(5 – 3) = y
