Targets Year 5 – Writing
Composing
Target
- Write in well-linked paragraphs showing cohesion (flow) within
paragraphs and from one paragraph to the next
- Link the end of a text back to the beginning of that text
- Use a wider range of vocabulary (better quality adjectives, verbs,
adverbs, expanded noun phrases)
Spelling
- Use adverbs and adverbials to show time, manner and place
- relative clause
Use different clauses and sentence starters
across a range of writing:
Grammar
- Use different techniques to improve expression (eg personification,
metaphor)
- ing (verb) starter
- past tense starter
- adjective starter
- adverb starter
- adverbials used in an embedded clause
- rhetorical questions
- conjunction starters:
(But: However, Although, Despite)
(Causal: As a result of, Because of, Due to)
(Comparison: Similarly, Just as, Unlike, In contrast to)
- Spell words ending in -able, -ible, -ably, -ibly
- Spell words ending in -cious, -tious, -cial, -tial
- Spell words ending in -ant, -ance, -ancy, -ent, -ence, -ency
- Spell words with the prefixes bi-, trans-, im-, pro-, mini-, micro- Spell words with the suffixes -ive, -ist, -ette, -ling
- Spell the words from the Year 5 word list
Punctuation
Use brackets, dashes or commas for parenthesis
