Those who opt out will receive an “Exempt” for this grade. Those who choose to do it must adhere to due dates, and it will be a graded assignment (see scoring guide), not “extra credit”. You may work on your own, or with one partner, but understand that regardless of the division of labor, both partners get the same grade. Instructions: The eukaryotic cell is often compared to a city, with cell parts similar in function to a city’s facilities. For example, the nucleus is like the mayor’s office, which makes decisions, sends instructions, and basically controls things in the city. Your task is to make these analogies between organelles and city departments or other components that make up a city, to find pictures online or from print media of these city components, and to assemble them into a poster following the guidelines below. Criteria: 1. Neatly and accurately DRAW a large plant or animal cell in the center of your poster. Must be in color. For creativity points, enhance with craft materials, multi-media 2. All organelles must be the appropriate size, have an accurate shape and location in the cell. Example, ribosomes are much smaller and more numerous than other organelles and are in the cytoplasm and attached to rough ER. Nuclear membrane is double-layered and has many pores. 3. Each organelle belongs in its appropriate category (see text and model below) and must be represented by a different city component. 4. Name the organelle, name its city counterpart, and include a picture of the city part. 5. Beneath each organelle, cite its function(s). Explain how this city part does a similar function. All text must be TYPED in large, legible font. 6. Arrange the city parts with descriptive text neatly and securely around the cell drawing. Include categories. Connect each picture with its cellular counterpart by an arrow. 7. Submit your written work to Turn-it-in.
