Ecological Relationships
Bee/Maribou
Stork
The stork uses its saw-like bill to cut up the dead animals it
eats. As a result the dead animal carcass is accessible to some
bees for food and egg laying.
Lion/Lion
A large male Lion locates another Lion feeding on a Zebra. The
two lions fight over the carcass. The larger Lion drives off the
smaller Lion.
Hermit Crab /
Snail Shell
Hermit crabs live in shells made and then abandoned by snails.
Barnacle / Whale
Barnacles create home sites by attaching themselves to whales.
The whales are not affected by the barnacles’ presence.
Mistletoe / Spruce
Tree
Mistletoe extracts water and nutrients from the spruce tree,
reducing the resources available to the tree.
Oxpecker /
Rhinoceros
Oxpeckers feed on the ticks found on the rhinoceros. The ticks
are feeding on the blood of the rhinoceros.
Mouse / Flea
A flea feeds on a mouse’s blood, weakening the mouse.
Zebra / Lion
The Zebra herd grazes in the sunshine. The lion chases down a
slower Zebra and begins to eat it.
Fox / Mouse
A fox moves slowly through the short grass. Suddenly, a mouse
bolts from a pile of leaves toward its burrow. The fox snatches
up the mouse and eats it.
Cuckoo / Warbler
A cuckoo may lay its eggs in a warbler’s nest. The cuckoo’s
young will displace the warbler’s young. The cuckoo chick will be
raised by the warblers.
Yucca Plant /
Yucca Moth
Yucca flowers depend on yucca moths to pollinate them. The
moths lay their eggs in the flowers where the larvae hatch and
eat some of the developing seeds.
King Snake /
Mouse
A snake moves silently across the floor of a barn. A mouse is
eating some scattered corn. The snake catches the mouse and
begins to swallow its meal for a week.
Cowbird / Buffalo
As buffalos walk through grass, insects become active and are
seen and eaten by cowbirds.
Wrasse Fish /
Black Sea Bass
Wrasse fish feed on the parasites found on the black sea bass’s
body.
Honey Guide Bird /
Badger
Honey Guide birds alert and direct badgers to bee hives. The
badgers then expose the hives and feed on the honey first. Then
the Honey Guide bird eats the remaining honey.
Silverfish / Army
Ants
Silverfish live and hunt with army ants. They share together in
eating the prey.
Ostrich / Gazelle
Ostriches and gazelles feed next to each other. They both watch
for predators and alert each other to danger. Since the visual
abilities of the two species are different, they can identify
threats the other animal would not as readily see.
