Identify the relationship of each of the organism pairs below as
mutualism (M), commensalism (C), or parasitism (P). Also draw
arrows to correctly illustrate the relationship.
Organism Pair
barnacle
whale
silverfish
army ant
mouse
flea
honey guide bird
badger
mistletoe
spruce tree
Description
Barnacles create home sites
by attaching themselves to
whales. This does not affect
the whales.
Silverfish live and hunt with
army ants. They also share
prey.
A flea feeds on a mouse’s
blood.
Honey guide birds show
badgers the location of bee
hives. The badgers break open
the hives and feed on the
honey first. Then the honey
guide birds eat.
Mistletoe takes water and
nutrients from the spruce
tree, which harms the tree.

Organism Pair
cowbird
buffalo
remora
shark
deer
tick
oxpecker
rhinoceros
ostrich
gazelle
hermit crab
snail shell
cuckoo
warbler
bee
marabou stork
yucca plant
yucca moth
wrasse fish
black sea bass
Description
As buffalos walk through
grass, they stir up insects that
are eaten by the cowbirds.
Remoras attach themselves to
a shark’s body and then travel
with the shark feeding on
leftover food scraps from the
shark’s meal. The shark is not
harmed
Ticks feed on deer blood.
Ticks can cause diseases in the
deer.
Oxpecker birds feed on the
ticks found on rhinos.
Ostriches and gazelles feed
next to each other. Both
watch for predators and alert
each other to danger. Since
the visual abilities of the two
species are different, they
each can identify threats the
other animal would not see.
Hermit crabs live in shells
made and then abandoned by
snails.
A cuckoo lays its eggs in a
warbler’s nest. The cuckoo
young push out the warbler
young, killing them. The
warbler is then tricked into
raising the cuckoo young.
The stork uses its saw-like bill
to cut up the dead animals it
eats. As a result, the animal
carcass can be used by some
bees for food and egg laying.
Yucca flowers are pollinated
by yucca moths. The moths lay
their eggs in the flowers,
where they hatch and develop.
Wrasse fish feed on the
parasites found on the black
sea bass’s body.
