Unit 6 Lesson 6
Alternative Assessment
Climb the Pyramid: Atomic Activities
Climb the pyramid to show what you have learned about the atom.
1. Work on your own, with a partner, or with a small group.
2. Choose one item from each layer of the pyramid. Check your choices.
3. Have your teacher approve your plan.
4. Submit or present your results.
__ Atomic Cooking
Choose an element and write a
recipe that describes the parts
of its atoms. Your recipe
should include the location and
charge of protons, neutrons,
and electrons, as well as the
element’s atomic number and
mass number.
__ Atom’s Next Top
__ Atoms Flipping Out!
Model
Construct a 3-D model or
mobile for an atom of sodium,
oxygen, or magnesium using
the element’s atomic number
and mass number. Your model
should show your atom’s
nucleus and electron cloud, as
well as the particles that are
located in each part.
Choose an element and make
a flipbook that shows how the
electrons move in the electron
cloud. Be sure to also identify
the nucleus and the parts that
can be found inside.
__ Atoms Acting Out!
__ Read the Small Print
__ That’s a Funny Theory
Write and perform a play in
which you imagine that you
have just developed the atomic
theory. Be sure to explain the
atomic theory in your play.
Imagine that you are a
newspaper writer who is
interviewing Democritus or
Aristotle about the atom. In
your article, discuss how their
ideas contributed to the current
atomic theory.
Design a cartoon or comic strip
about the atomic theory.
Include some early ideas about
the atom as well as the current
atomic theory.
