CENTRAL CONNECTICUT STATE UNIVERSITY Lesson Plan Template THE SOLAR SYSTEM – INNER PLANETS Student Teacher Becca Sutay Grade Level 5 Date of lesson 4/16/12 Content Standards/Relationship to Standards: State the appropriate curriculum standard(s) and how this lesson aligns with the standard’s outcomes. Content Standards: 5.3a. The positions of the earth and moon relative to the sun explain the cycles of day and night, and the monthly moon phases. Technology Standards: 1b. Create original works as a means of personal or group expression Learner Background: Discuss prior learning that has occurred that will support the lesson’s learning objective and how this lesson supports subsequent lessons. - The students will have already learned about the solar system in previous grades. This lesson goes more in-depth when it comes to the individual planets. The students know how to use a class blog, Moodle, and a wiki from previous assignments given in class. Specific Learning Objectives: of Learners Student Learning Objective(s): State the intended learning outcome of this lesson. Be sure it is observable and includes clear criteria. *NOTE – cooperative learning lessons must include a social skill objective in addition to the academic objective Assessment: Learners Meeting the Needs Objective(s) for most/all students Modification/Accommodations of Objective(s) if needed for struggling and/or advanced groups The students will be able to identify ten characteristics of one of the inner planets in the solar system, and show their knowledge in the booklet created by the group. The students will use a Wiki to communicate with one another and post what they discover about their individual planets. Meeting the Needs of Assessment: State the specific strategy (ies) and tools used to collect the data for each SLO. (Examples: essays, projects, quiz, exit slip, worksheet, etc.) Assessment tool(s) for most/all students Modifications/Accommodations of Assessment (if needed for struggling and/or advanced groups) There will be four groups of four. Each group will complete a booklet showing what they have learned about each of the inner planets in our solar system. The students will be assessed individually for their section of the booklet. Classroom Learning Environment: Cite positive strategy (ies) that will be utilized to support student learning and increase student engagement throughout the lesson based on your evaluation from previous lessons/observations. Include response strategies for off-task behavior and/or conflict. Provide detail for each checked items (minimum of 4 checked strategies). X X X X Standards of Behavior Routines/Procedures Group Work Transitions Student Engagement Instructional Arrangement Instructional Model/Strategy: State the rationale for the chosen model(s). Explain how you will best facilitate student learning through a specific model of instruction. You may check more than one. X X X X Direct Instruction Cooperative Learning – specific strategy Inquiry Concept formation/Concept Development Discussion Materials/Resources: Learners Materials/Resources: Materials/resources used in each learning activity including modifications for individual students in order to facilitate learning Meeting the Needs of All Materials/Resources for most/all students. -computer/internet - construction paper -pencils/markers - scissors - stapler - glue Modification/Accommodations and/or Differentiation of resources if needed for struggling or advanced groups or students identified with specific needs. Initiation: Learners Meeting the Needs of All Modifications/Accommodations ~ Note specific modifications and accommodations for students with specific needs based on your evaluation from previous lessons. and./or Differentiation ~ Note specific strategies to be employed during lesson to address differentiated learning needs (ex: learning styles, modalities, interests, readiness, etc.) based on your evaluation from previous lessons. Initiation Briefly describe how you will initiate the lesson by: - 1) motivating learners to focus on expectations for learning and behaviors; 2) explaining: a) what they will be doing and learning in the lesson; b) how they will demonstrate learning; c) why it is important. - Lesson Development: - - Start the lesson by asking the students what they already know about the planets. Ask if they know what the inner four planets are. Write down on the board all of their prior knowledge. Explain that they are going to research one of the four inner planets that night at home for homework and post what they have found on their group’s Wiki site. Explain that they will be assessed on a booklet that they come up with together as a group about the four inner planets. Teacher shows an example of a completed inner planet booklet Meeting the Needs of All Learners Modifications/Accommodations ~ Note specific modifications and accommodations for students with specific needs based on your evaluation from previous lessons. and/or Differentiation ~ Note specific strategies to be employed during lesson to address differentiated learning needs (ex: learning styles, modalities, interests, readiness, etc.) based on your evaluation from previous lessons. Lesson Development A. Describe sequentially how you will: 1) develop the lesson; 2) model and guide practice; 3) engage students in learning experiences to enable them to meet learning outcome(s); B. Identify the instructional groupings you will use in each phase of instruction (whole group, small group, pairs, individuals, etc) Students will: - After the initiation, the students will get into their groups of four. The groups are always the same for every group project – each group has a section of the Wiki set up for them where they each can access this Wiki from home. - Each student picks an inner planet and that night at home has to research that planet – has to come up with 10 characteristics of that planet and find a detailed photograph of that planet – characteristics have to include; size, number of moons, and atmosphere/surface of that planet - Post findings on the Wiki as well as print out a copy of the facts/ characteristics found to bring into class the next day to share with the group - If there are any questions as to what the assignment is, it is reposted on Moodle and all of the students know how to access Moodle The next day in class the students get back into their groups and talk about their findings – compare/contrast the four inner planets together - Each group gets materials needed to make an inner planet booklet (materials are listed previously in the lesson plan) - Each student cuts out the picture that they found of their planet and paste it on the left side of the page in the booklet - Each student lists their characteristics in marker on the right side of the page in the booklet - Do the same for the four inner planets and complete the booklet as a group - Each group hands in their booklet to be assessed – scores found on Google spreadsheet - That night for homework the students have to go onto their class blog that they have used before for previous assignments and respond to the question that the teacher posts – they will be responding to the group activity - Once the booklets are completed and graded, the teacher will scan them and put them onto the Moodle website for the class so everyone can access them and see what the other groups came up with – the students can download the other booklets from Moodle as an additional resource for the class – they can use these booklets as a study guide for a test at the end of the solar system unit Closure: Closure Describe how you will enable the students to; 1. 1. question and apply learning by reviewing lesson content 2. analyze by connecting this lesson to previous and subsequent learning 3. see relevancy by understanding purpose/importanc e of the learning - - After this lesson the students will know facts about the inner planets of the solar system and when we move onto the outer planets of the solar system, they will be able to compare/contrast what they discover about those planets with what we learned about the inner planets. Students will know what the inner planets look like. Students will know facts about each of the inner planets and have access to the booklets that were made in class through the class Moodle site Students will have a better understanding when it comes to working outside of class with a group as well as in class with a group on the same project. Adaptation: Instead of modifying a lesson plan and making it my own, I created it myself. There is no adaption made for this lesson plan.
