THE SILENT WHISTLE (PART 2) Module Phonics Unit Sounds and Letters Key Stage Targets (KS2) To develop an ever-improving capability to use English to converse about feelings, interests, ideas, experiences and plans (I.D. b) to develop an awareness of the basic sound patterns of English and an enjoyment of imaginative texts through activities such as reciting poems and rhymes, singing songs and presenting short simple plays (E.D. a) to give expression to imaginative ideas through oral, written and performative means such as creating simple rhymes and poems with support from the teacher (E.D. c) Programme Outline This is the second part of “The Silent Whistle”, one of the Phonics Series programmes that aims at arousing pupils’ interest in phonics. The programme continues with Hugo and his sister, Kim’s visit to Professor Sound’s sound workshop. There they discover Professor Sound’s word organ* and are welcomed by Word Turtle - Professor Sound’s strange-looking assistant. Who is Word Turtle? Word Turtle himself says that he looks after the dictionary and he loves words. However, Professor Sound thinks that Word Turtle does nothing but makes all sorts of mistakes on his sound organ. And right now something is very wrong in the workshop. Word Turtle has broken the sound organ again! That’s why the sound workshop is full of noise and smoke. And Hugo and Kim are going to fix it with the help of the Silent Whistle and their knowledge of phonics! The programme ends with a cartoon segment called “Six Days” highlighting the sound of the letter /d/. Please invite the pupils to join Word Turtle to learn some phonics. *The sound organ in the programme is an instrument that makes the sounds of the letters. Pre-viewing Activities 1. Motivate the class by introducing to pupils the sounds of the letters. Teachers can start by asking pupils to practise the sounds /s/, /t/, /p/ and /d/. These are the sounds that Kim knows. Teachers may like to watch “Phonics Programme for Teachers” broadcast in the Teacher Reference Programme (TRP) timeslots to get some ideas on the teaching of phonics. 2. Teachers can briefly recap Part 1 of the story and then introduce the story outline of Part 2 to the class. 3. Teachers can motivate the class by asking them to guess the following: “Who is Word Turtle?” “What does he do?” “What is an organ?” “What is a sound organ?” “What does it do?” 4. 5. Teachers can encourage the class to sing along Word Turtle’s song. The lyrics can be found in COPYMASTER 1. Teachers should highlight the words that begin or end with the letter D, for example the words in the cartoon segment “Six Days”, bad, day, sad, glad, mad, cold, food, hood, mood. The rhyme and the words for practice in the cartoon segment can be found in COPYMASTER 1. While-viewing Activity 1. Pupils watch the programme and can follow Word Turtle’s song in COPYMASTER 1. 2. Pupils can follow the cartoon segment “Six Days” and practise reading the sounds of /d/ in COPYMASTER 1. Post-viewing Activities As a follow-up activity, teachers can ask the pupils to think of some other words that begin or end with the letter D. The pupils can then write a short rhyme using the words in “Six Days”. COPYMASTER 1 While-viewing Activities 1. Word Turtle’s Song Why should I be sitting here for so long? Oh, when will he be coming back home? Doesn’t he know I am waiting for him so? I can’t read the words I’m supposed to know. I’m the word turtle that can’t read at all. I’m the word turtle that just can’t read. Where’s Professor Sound who collects all the sounds? I’m the word turtle that just can’t read. But I like words. Words are my favourite friends. Who’s teaching me to read all the words here? S.A.D. that’s what I feel. But how can I sound out this word? Let me try this sound organ. That’s where he stores all the sounds. I’m the word turtle that just can’t read. 2. Cartoon Segment “Six Days” - Brought to you by the letter D Bad day, feel sad. Good day, feel glad. Cross day, feel mad. Cold day, feel like food.
