Sea Turtles of Panama
According to studies performed, the first two turtles evolved about 110 million years.
In our coasts and graze spawn five of the seven species of sea turtle in the Pacific are
five and four species in the Caribbean, they are:






Caretta caretta: Caguama Turtle
Chelonia mydas: Green Turtle
Eretmochelys imbricate: Carey Turtle
Dermochelys coriacea: Canal Turtle
Lepidochelys olivacea (the latter species only in the Pacific) : Mulato Turtle.
The Chelonia agassizii was seen as another species. Currently genetic studies and
molecular biology show that there are different species.
There are many circumstances why many turtle species have been exterminated in
bulk:




the unlawful removal of turtle eggs that are used for commercial purposes in
bars
the killing of turtles by shrimp trawling and agalleres nets
pollution
destruction of their habitat.
One of the most important ecological functions of marine turtles, is they carry
energy between the sea and terrestrial habitats and nesting beaches around.
On the beach La Barqueta, ANAM is doing a very effective job with little support
material, it is the duty of all Panamanian citizens to learn to take care of our marine
resources, including turtles and not be complicit of people killing our turtles from
ruthlessly and steal their eggs only for his vulgar drunkenness. Let's help protect
them and be part of this effort; it also has the purpose of Panama Marine Resource
Foundation caring for our marine resources.
I invite you to adopt a turtle and take her in your heart for the rest of your life,it is
our primary resource and one of the few marine animals that allows us to see how
they spawn their eggas and return to the sea.
A turtle is a symbol of a smile, the smile of your heart
