BASIC KNOWLEDGE (40 Points)
Lessons:
Minerals, Graphing in Science
_____ 10 pts
_____ 10 pts
Reading and Questions
Read text pp. 96-102, do section review questions p. 102 # 1-5
Interpreting Charts: do p. 115 questions 19-22.
Write out both the questions and the answers.
Visual Arts/Vocabulary
Make an 8.5 x 11 poster titled “Minerals” that shows, in both
drawings and words, the meaning or use of the following terms:
atom, mineral, luster, streak, mineral density, breakage: cleavage
vs. fracture, hardness, silica tetrahedron.
Directions: 1. Fold the paper down the middle to make two
columns. Then fold it twice into a square so that when it opens
there are 8 boxes. Label each box with a word from the list, draw a
picture for that word, and give a description (in your own wordsnot a dictionary definition!) or example or application of that
word as it relates to minerals.

Poster: My Favorite Mineral
Make an 11x17 poster of your favorite mineral. Use
rubric given in class for specific instructions. You will choose
a mineral to research. Use books or Internet. Websites to try:
www.webminerals.com and www.minerals.net.
OR
Mining the Moon: Listen to and/or read the podcast at:
http://www.uh.edu/engines/epi430.htm
Then answer the questions on the handout.

Honors Project: Mineral Resources in your State
1. Choose a state that you will focus on all year.
2. In your composition book, make an introductory page that
includes a few interesting scientific or geologic facts about your
state.
3. Research and read about the minerals in your state online.
In your composition book, summarize: a) what
minerals are found in your state; b) what these minerals are used
for; c) how these minerals contribute to your state’s economy; and
d) cite the sources that you used.
