Required Assignments:
 Sentences: Choose ½ of your spelling words to write in original, complete sentences in your
spelling notebook. Use ONLY ONE spelling word in each sentence and underline the word!
Remember to number each sentence and skip a line in between sentences. Don’t forget to
check your grammar and spelling!
 Dictionary: Look up the other ½ of your spelling words in the dictionary. Write the word,
the part of speech, and the definition beside each word in your spelling notebook.
Remember to underline the spelling word, number each sentence, and skip a line in between
each word.
Optional Assignments:
 Alphabetical Order: Sort your spelling words by alphabetical order. Then copy the
alphabetized list into your spelling notebook. Remember to number each word and skip a
line in between words.
 3 Times Each: In your spelling notebook, neatly write each spelling word three times in
your BEST manuscript (CURSIVE) handwriting. Remember to number each word and
skip a line in between words.
 Prefixes and Suffixes: In your spelling notebook, make and label three columns: spelling
words, prefixes, and suffixes. Then list and number 12 of your spelling words and create at
least 12 words that came from or could be made from these words by adding prefixes and
suffixes. Example: word is “bake.” Possible words listed under prefixes could include
“prebake or overbake.” Possible words listed under suffixes could include “baking or
baker.” (Use a dictionary or thesaurus if you need help!)
 Word Triangles: Take a copy of the Spelling Word Triangle paper home with you from
school. Neatly complete the spelling triangles by following the example on the worksheet.
Remember to number each word and draw a triangle around the outer edge of each
completed word. When finished, staple the worksheet into your spelling notebook.
 Word Hunt: Cut out words from newspapers or magazines that follow this week’s spelling
patterns. In your spelling notebook, label each pattern and paste the words underneath the
correct column. Remember to find AT LEAST 3 words for each pattern.
 Synonyms and Antonyms: In your spelling notebook, make a list of one synonym AND
antonym for at least 12 of your spelling words. Make and label three columns: spelling
words, synonyms, and antonyms. Then list and number 12 of your spelling words and write
a synonym AND antonym for each word under the correct columns. Example: word is
“frightened.” A synonym could be “scared” and an antonym could be “brave.” (Use a
dictionary or thesaurus if you need help!)
 Illustrate Twelve Words: Choose twelve of your spelling words. In your spelling notebook,
number and write each word you chose. Then draw AND color a picture for each word to
illustrate the spelling word’s meaning.
 Practice: Ask an adult to call out your spelling words to you. In your spelling notebook,
write your spelling words under the proper pattern headings. Ask the adult to “grade” your
test for you. Write any corrections that may be required.
Parent,
At the end of the second week on Thursday night, please sign below to indicate that you have
checked the 8 activities your child completed at home in their spelling notebook for their list.
