‘Silky Red’ (bloodflower) and ‘Silky Gold’
Monarch (Danaus plexippus)
(links)
A species of evergreen perennial plant native from tropical America and
now naturalised in many parts of the world. It is grown as an ornamental
garden plant and a cut flower, and as a source of food for Monarch
caterpillars.
Plants grow up to 1 metre tall with pale grey stems. The plants have a
milky sap which is poisonous.
The leaves are arranged oppositely on the stems and are lanceolate or
oblong-lanceolate, ending in acuminate or acute tips.
The flowers are in cymes, each with 10-20 flowers. They have red to
purple corollas, and the lobes of the corona are yellow-orange – or in
the case of ‘Silky Gold’ the corollas are also bright yellow.
The fruits are 5-10cm long, fusiform-shaped (or cigar-shaped). These
are called ‘follicles’, and each one contains many tan-brown seeds ovate
in shape and 6-7mm long.
Plants can flower nearly all year round. The flat seeds have silky hairs
which allow them to float on air currents when the pod-like follicles
split open.
