COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This course covers dental pathology and microbiology. It includes an introduction to common abnormalities of
the teeth and supporting structures, the oral symptoms of systemic diseases, and the principles of disease
transmission.
COURSE PREREQUISITE (S):
RATIONALE:
This course was developed to meet the requirements and guidelines of the college and for accreditation with the
American Dental Association.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:
Upon completion of this course, the Dental Assisting Student will be able to:
1. List and describe the three types of microorganisms that are of concern in the dental office.
2. Describe the forms of disease transmission in the dental office.
3. Discuss the major diseases of the teeth and surrounding tissues of the oral cavity.
4. Describe the oral manifestations and implications for dental treatment of oral cancer and secondary oral disorders.
5. Describe the oral manifestations and implications for dental treatment of HIV/AIDS, Hepatitis and Herpes.
6. Describe the symptoms, causes and treatment of temporomandibular disorders.
7. Describe the three types of oral cancers, state the warning signs and preventive measures and the dental
implications of chemotherapy and radiation treatment.
8. Describe opportunistic infections associated with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) that have oral
manifestations.

CLASSIFICATION OF MICROORGANISMS
Upon completion of this unit, the student will be able to:
1. Identify Anton Van Leeuwenhoek, Louis Pasteur, and Robert Koch according to their contributions to
microbiology.
2. Discuss the contributions of Ignaz Semmelweis, Oliver Wendell Holmes, Joseph Lister,
and Willouby Miller.
3. List several important activities of microorganisms.
4. Describe the different shapes of bacteria.
5. List and briefly describe the conditions that influence the growth of bacteria.
6. Name some localized infections and systemic diseases caused by bacteria.
7. Discuss the methods used to control the growth of bacteria.
8. List characteristics pertaining to viruses.
9. Name some diseases caused by viruses.
