Chemistry 20 Course Outline
Last modified Aug. 2014
Teacher: Mr. A.R. Campbell
General Information about Chemistry 20:
Chemistry is the study of matter and its changes. Chemistry 20 has the goal of providing students with an
understanding of the different kinds of matter, the way matter is held together, and how it reacts with other
matter. Chemistry is best explored with active participation of the student and teacher alike and therefore
lab experimentation is an essential part of the learning process. The Alberta curriculum also emphasizes the
interaction of science with society and so some technologies will be examined and the impact on society
discussed.
Chemistry 20 consists of the following four units:
Review Unit (text chapters 1,2)
Unit 1: Chemical Bonding (text chapter 3)
Unit 2: Gases as a Form of Matter (text chapter 4)
Unit 3: Solutions, Acids and Bases (text chapters 5,6)
Unit 4: Quantitative Relationships in Chemical Change (text chapter 7,8)

Chapter tests will cover all class material and notes, assigned readings, and text readings; anything you do
in class may appear on assessment material. Exams are more heavily weighted than quizzes. Assignments
and labs will have due dates and will be handed in for marks.
Homework is always due the day after it is assigned. Sometimes I will check homework and sometimes I
won’t.
Evaluation Policy:
Three Opportunity Rule
1. The student hands in the assignment or lab on time. The mark on the assignment is full value.
2. If the assignment is not completed then a second opportunity is given to complete it. The work is
expected to be completed in the library by the end of the class if it is an assignment that is similar
to every other classmate or by the next class if it is a unique assignment. A late penalty of 15%
applies.
3. If a third opportunity is required then parents will be notified and an extra day will be allowed to
get the assignment done. A late penalty of 30% will be deducted from the project mark.
4. Homework checks can get a mark of zero.
Students will be warned of upcoming tests at least 3 days in advance. Missed tests will be given a mark of
zero with no chance of rewrite unless a valid medical or parental note is provided. If a note is provided
rewrites will be scheduled for the first day a student is back in class.
Students who are absent are expected to get any missed notes, homework, assignments, and labs from their
classmates.
Note: Students will not be reminded of this policy and it is
their responsibility to be aware of situations that apply to
them.
Classroom Responsibility:

Please leave your music players off during lessons. Studies have shown that memory retention is
negatively affected when music is listened to at the same time as a lesson. Music players may be
used during times of individual seatwork.
Do not use your cell phone during class time. If you need to use your phone please ask for
permission to use it.
Lates will not be tolerated. A student is late if they are not ready for class in their seat with their
books open when the bell rings. In the morning a student is late if they are not in class by the time
the announcements start. Every three lates will equal time made up at a lunch hour.
Students are expected to attend all classes; repeated absences will not be tolerated.
Students are expected to behave in a responsible manner that shows respect towards each other and
the teacher.
Disruptive behavior will not be tolerated.
Please do not touch the computer.
If you must go to the washroom please wait until there is a time that is not disruptive to the lesson.
Teacher Responsibility:
I will make myself as available for extra help as my schedule allows. I am willing to give extra help and am
often available in the morning, at lunch, and after school.
