Study Guide Intro to Algebra Unit Five: Simplifying Expressions Date: Thursday 2/12/09 Topic on Test In Class Activities Homework (always Yellow) & NOTES (always Salmon) Pg 117: 34 – 44 evens Algebraic Expressions: Understand that an algebraic expression is simply a way to show a number if we don’t know all its parts Be able to translate words into algebraic expressions Understand that each term in an algebraic expression (2xy) has a “what” (in this case xy) and a “how many” (in this case 2) Understand the difference between adding or subtracting terms and multiplying terms (x + x is different than x * x) Be able to add or subtract terms and multiply or divide terms Understand the difference between adding terms and combining terms (One can add any two terms together, but one can only COMBINE like terms) Understand the Distributive Property and how to distribute both multiplication and division. Be able to fully simplify algebraic expressions by the steps discussed in class (turn subtraction into addition, distribute multiplication and division, then combine all like terms) Understand the similarities between how algebraic terms and fractions are similar when it comes to the four operations (possible essay) Be able to find expressions to stand for the area and perimeter of various shapes 1/21 Notes on Algebraic Expressions 1/23 Notes on Distributive Property 1/25 Notes on Adding versus Multiplying terms Pg 54: 2, 3, 10 – 20 evens, 28 Why Did the Football Coach..? Simplifying Expressions 1/30 Notes on Polynomials 2/2 Notes on Comparing Fractions and Terms Simplifying Expressions: The Sequel Area and Perimeter Pg 50: 1 – 12 all Writing Expressions (both front and back) Combine Like Terms Polynomials: Pg 122: 28-38 evens Understand the following vocabulary terms: o Monomial o Binomial o Trinomial o Polynomial Be able to determine the degree of an expression by examining the exponents of the variables in the term (the largest exponent in a term sets the degree for the expression)
