OPERA CO. “Calls” were numerous
at Prince’s Theatre last night when
the Rupert D’Oyly Carte Opera Coy.
Said “Goodbye” for the present – to
a record audience. At the close of
the performance “calls” were taken
by the whole of the company en
masse and individually by Mr
Geoffrey Toye (conductor) and Mr
J.M.Gordon (stage manager), and
the principal members of the Opera
Co. Photo. The scene on the stage.

marks and scuffs on actual print
and some light staining on rear of
print; obviously a press release.
Undated, but an intelligent guess
would put the date as 26th July
1924, when the company finished a
25 week season at London’s Princes
Theatre, with principals including
Lytton, Sheffield, Lewis, Lawson,
Granville, Fancourt, etc, etc. OR 31st
January 1920, when the Company
again had finished a long run at
Princes Theatre. One of those two
dates.

Patience,Yeomen, Ida, Trial,
Sorcerer, Pirates, Pinafore ; and
portraits of company members
Lytton, Sheffield, Oldham, Lucas,

Very used condition; stained, dirty,
finger marks, small tears
throughout at tops and bottoms of
pages, fading especially outside
back cover. Rusted central staples.
Some small folds, curls to corners

HOWEVER (!) it is complete and
everything is legible and the copy
and photographs are very easy to
view and read.

CONDITION
“The original production of HMS
PINAFORE took place at the Opera
Comique Theatre in 1878. The
programme for the occasion was
printed to serve the first and
second performances and so bears
“Saturday May 25th and Monday
May 27th” on the front cover and
inside.
It is the only programme used on a
first night that does not mention
the composer conducting the opera
although it is known that he did in
fact do so.
As a souvenir of the ninety-fifth
anniversary of HMS PINAFORE
we are pleased to present a
facsimile reproduction of the
programme that was used for the
original production.” The above
copy printed inside front cover.
On the inside of the back cover is
printed The D’Oyly Carte Opera
Company cast in the “present
performance of” HMS PINAFORE,
including Reed, Rayner, Mason,
Ayldon, Ellison, Broad, Hutchison,
Wales, Holland, with MD Royston

CARTE”. Envelope is very lightly
faded along long edges.

Undated and I have been unable to
set a date for this photograph; also
have been unable to trace the “Mr
Victor” to whom Darrell Fancourt
alludes, and indeed sends this
photograph.
Approx size of item is 5.25” x 8.25”
Fancourt appeared to join the
company in May 1920 and
occasionally substituted for The
Mikado. He then assumed the role
as his own from the 1920/21 Season
onwards until the 1953 season.
“It would seem that Gilbert himself
had a particular affection for THE
YEOMEN OF THE GUARD, since
in a letter addressed to Mrs Carte
in 1891 he asked if he might have
as a keepsake the original
executioner’s block and axe. “I
should like to have them”, he said,
“as a relic of the best of our joint
work at the Savoy.” The first
performance of this opera took
place exactly seventy-five years
ago today, on the 3rd October 1888,
at the Savoy Theatre. As a
souvenir of the occasion we are
pleased to present this facsimile
reproduction of the first-night
programme.” The above copy

OF “RUDDYGORE” AT THE
SAVOY
This is a very interesting piece of
history, having as it does the
original title of RUDDYGORE (with
the letter Y, about to be replaced
with the letter I). The sketches,
while familiar to the G & S
afficianado, are excellent when seen
displayed on the full page with the
lettering “Ruddygore at the Savoy
Theatre” over-run by dripping
blood from a dagger! And the
review is most entertaining,
arguing about the “hideous and
repulsive title” for about a quarter
of the review. There are interesting
comments too about the diction
and projection of the cast, (with the
exception of Jessie Bond, Rutland
Barrington, & Richard Temple),
going on to say that this major fault
is all too common at the Savoy – a
comment which must have
infuriated Gilbert.

Very good condition, but lightly
folded in two, and kept in
protective polythene covering as it
was when I acquired it. Its size is
approx. 12” wide by 16” deep when
opened out, and would appear to
have been torn from the paper, as
one of the long edges gives that
suggestion, while the other edge is
straight and clean. Slight fading
from age, but otherwise in very
good condition.

Small exhibition originally seen at
Sadlers Wells Theatre in 1991; this
exhibition transferred from King’s
in Glasgow to Mitchell Theatre in
Glasgow. Small insert pink slip says
“The exhibition OUT OF BOUNDS
OUT OF COPYRIGHT was first
seen at Sadler’s Wells Theatre
earlier this month and shows how
Gilbert and Sullivan fared in early
American productions and in
Britain after the copyright of the
text expired in 1961. As more space
is available at the Mitchell Theatre
the exhibition has been extended to
include items relating to Gilbert
without Sullivan, Sullivan without
Gilbert, and D’Oyly Carte without
both Gilbert and Sullivan. The
extra items were chosen to
compliment the decision by the
D’Oyly Carte Company to diversify
from the works of Gilbert and
Sullivan in the near future. The
extra items include IVANHOE,
THE CHIEFTAIN, THE ROSE OF

fold/crease at bottom right hand

bottom left hand corner of back
cover has miniscule piece of corner
missing. Cast Change Slip is
complete with small fold on top left
hand of the slip. The pencil
additions by Mr Douglas Walker
already alluded to are very lightly
written. Some general fading at
spine area and perimeters of pages,
as to be expected of copy this old.
The actual libretto is perfect, (as if
perhaps read during the
performance, and not referred to

Another interesting and detailed
photograph of the extremely
detailed Act II set, this time with
the company posing as per,
presumably, Act II opening scene/s
– obviously posed for company
photograph, complete with Ludwig
(Barrington), Julia (Palmay), and
Lisa (Perry). The full set has floor
covering (as if marble/mosaic) and
it also has fully detailed roof which
(as I know to my cost) makes
lighting the set extremely difficult
and challenging. A large chorus of
ladies and gentlemen – about
24/26 ladies – everyone in full
costumes with armoury, lyres, etc,
etc..
Small original theatre programme
approx. size 6” wide x 5”. Julia
Jellicoe is played by the creator of
the role, Mdme Ilka Palmay – the
middle “von” has been dropped.

a libretto by Basil Hood, produced
by William Greet. The first
performance was at the Savoy
Theatre, London, on 22 January
1903 and ran for 115 performances.
The opera was the last new work
produced by the D'Oyly Carte
Opera Company at the Savoy
Theatre, and is therefore
considered by some to be the
last Savoy opera. Cast includes
Passmore, Evett, Lytton, Pounds,
Brandram. MD Mr Hamish

VOCAL SCORE FOR THE OPERA
“HADDON HALL”; hardback
Haddon Hall is an English light
opera with music by Arthur
Sullivan and a libretto by Sydney
Grundy. The opera, set at Haddon
Hall, dramatises the legend of
Dorothy Vernon's elopement with
John Manners, resetting the tale in
the 17th century. It premiered at
the Savoy Theatre on September
24, 1892 for a modestly successful
run of 204 performances. The piece
was popular with amateur theatre
groups, particularly in Britain,
through the 1920s, but it has been
produced very rarely since then.
The frontispiece says “All rights
reserved under the Copyright Act
1911,
and
the
International
Copyright
Conventions
are
reserved.”
Excellent, solid condition, approx.
size of score being 8.5” x 10.5”.
Printed on both front pages that it
is a FIRST EDITION. The score is
hardback (has obviously been
bound in this cover), with red spine
and
gold
lettering
saying HADDON HALL,

pages).
Size of lib 5.5” x 8.5” This Chappell
lib is well-used, fading and some
small tears throughout where folds
have become worn, rusty staples,
but complete; it has obviously been
folded, cover edges are rough and
torn; Rupert D'Oyly Carte is in
charge by the time of this lib's
publication. Written across top of
cover is name in Caps GEORGE
LAWRIE, and immediately below
is name stamp George Lawrie.
