LINCOLN HIGH SCHOOL Talladega County Schools Geometry A Syllabus Mrs. Lindsey O. Edmondson 2010 – 2011 Course Objective: This course provides students with a broader knowledge of shapes, their properties, and assists with the development of spatial sense, which is critical for further study in mathematics and for everyday life. Geometry also provides an excellent context for developing students’ abilities to reason and write proofs. In this course, students will be engaged in problematic situations in which they form conjectures, determine the validity of these conjectures, and defend their conclusions to their classmates. An emphasis will be placed on the power of deductive reasoning, expressed either informally or formally in a variety of formats. Course Text: Geometry by Glencoe Mathematics Supplies: 1 ½” Three-ring Binder with pockets 5 Dividers with Tabs (Can be home-made with titles of: Notes, Homework, Journal, Assessments, Handouts) Loose Leaf Paper (college or wide rule) Graph Paper (will not be needed immediately; I will give you at least one week of warning before this is necessary) Pencils ONLY Scientific Calculator is recommended for use in class and at home (a graphing calculator is not required) Ruler Classroom Procedures: Come to class prepared with all necessary materials (textbook, notebook, pencil, etc). Be seated with homework out and ready for class to begin before the late bell rings. Gain permission from the teacher before speaking or leaving the class. Participate in classroom discussions. No food or drink is allowed. No cell phones or electronic devices. The teacher will dismiss the class NOT the bell. Classroom Expectations: Respect your teachers! Respect school property! Grading Procedures: Letter grades will be given according to the grading procedures outlined in the Talladega County Students Rights & Responsibilities Handbook. A: 90-100 B: 80-89 C: 70-79 D: 60-69 F: 59 AND BELOW Class daily average will be determined by dividing the total points earned by the total points possible. Assignments will include class work, homework, quizzes, tests, projects, and bell ringers. This average will count 80% of the semester grade. The final 20% of the semester grade will be the semester exam. Attendance Policy: If you are absent from this class (it does not matter whether you miss the entire day, if you checked in or out, or are involved in extracurricular activities) you must have an excuse to receive credit for missed work. This includes test, classwork, and homework. Any work assigned before you missed class is due the day you return. All make-up work must be turned in within 3 days after the student returns to school. ALABAMA COURSE OF STUDY OBJECTIVES FOR GEOMETRY 1. Determine the equation of a line parallel or perpendicular to a second line through a given point. 2. Justify theorems related to pairs of angles, including angles formed by parallel and perpendicular lines, vertical angles, adjacent angles, complementary angles, and supplementary angles. 3. Verify the relationships among different classes of polygons by using their properties. Determining the missing lengths of sides or measures of angles in similar polygons 4. Determine the measure of interior and exterior angles associated with polygons. Verifying the formulas for the measures of interior and exterior angles of polygons inductively and deductively 5. Solve real-life and mathematical problems using properties and theorems related to circles, quadrilaterals, and other geometric shapes. Determining the equation of a circle given its center and radius 6. Apply the Pythagorean Theorem to solve application problems, expressing answers in simplified radical form or as decimal approximations, using Pythagorean triples when applicable. 7. Use the ratios of the sides of special right triangles to find lengths of missing sides. Deriving the ratios of the sides of 30-60-90 and 45-45-90 triangles 8. Deduce relationships between two triangles, including proving congruence or similarity of the triangles from given information, using the relationships to solve problems and to establish other relationships. Determining the geometric mean to find missing lengths in right triangles 9. Use inductive reasoning to make conjectures and deductive reasoning to justify conclusions. Recognizing the limitations of justifying a conclusion through inductive reasoning 10. Find the missing measures of sides and angles in right triangles by applying the right triangle definitions of sine, cosine, and tangent. 11. Determine the areas and perimeters of regular polygons, including inscribed or circumscribed polygons, given the coordinates of vertices or other characteristics. 12. Apply distance, midpoint, and slope formulas to solve problems and to confirm properties of polygons. 13. Identify the coordinates of the vertices of the image of a given polygon that is translated, rotated, reflected, or dilated. 14. Classify polyhedrons according to their properties, including the number of faces. Identifying Euclidean solids 15. Calculate measures of arcs and sectors of a circle from given information. 16. Calculate surface areas and volumes of solid figures, including spheres, cones, and pyramids. Developing formulas for surface area and volume of spheres, cones, and pyramids Calculating specific missing dimensions of solid figures from surface area or volume Determining the relationship between the surface areas of similar figures and volumes of similar figures 17. Analyze sets of data from geometric contexts to determine what, if any, relationships exist. Distinguishing between conclusions drawn when using deductive and statistical reasoning Calculating probabilities arising in geometric contexts 18. Construct with precision a circle graph to represent data from given tables or classroom experiments.
