Chapter 6- Chemical Bonding
Chapter Objectives
Section 1 – Introduction to Chemical Bonding




Define chemical bond.
Describe and differentiate ionic, polar covalent and non-polar covalent bonding.
Calculate and classify bonds according to electronegativity differences.
Calculate the percentage of ionic character of any bond using electronegativity.
Section 2 – Covalent Bonding and Molecular Compounds




Explain the relationship of potential energy and distance between approaching
atoms.
Describe the octet rule as it applies to ionic and covalent bonding.
Write Lewis structures to illustrate ionic and covalent bonds.
Write Lewis structures for polyatomic ions and molecules with multiple bonds.
Section 3 – Ionic Bonding and Ionic Compounds





Differentiate between a formula unit and a molecular formula.
Describe the arrangement of ions in crystal form (lattice structure).
Describe the ionic bonding process.
Define lattice energy and describe its significance.
Distinguish between the characteristics (melting point, boiling point, electrical
conductivity) of ionic and molecular compounds.
Section 4 – Metallic Bonding



Describe the “electron sea” model.
Describe/explain metallic properties (malleability, ductility, luster, conductivity).
Explain why hammering flattens metals, but shatters crystals
Section 5 – Molecular Geometry






Define and use the VSEPR theory to predict the shapes of molecules.
Memorize the molecular shapes and associated hybrid orbitals.
Describe the formation of hybrid orbitals.
Know the shapes and hybridization of octet rule “violators.”
Draw resonance structures as required for various molecular or polyatomic species.
Explain molecular polarity, dipole-dipole forces, hydrogen bonding and London
forces. How and why do these affect the physical properties of the substances?
