Topic: 1-4 Translating Words into Symbols Objective: To translate phrases into variable expressions Core Content for Assessment: MA-11-1.1.1a Students will use order relations (less than, greater than, equal to) to represent problems using real numbers Materials/Resources Textbook Procedures: 1. Warm-up 2. Check HW as appropriate 3. Go over translation phrases: Operation Addition Subtraction Multiplication Division Phrase Sum of Increased by More than Difference Decreased by Less than Minus Product of Times Of Quotient of Divided by Point out phrases involving subtraction can be confusing: 5 less than x is x-5 not 5-x. 4. Practice translation examples a. four more than six times a number 6x + 4 b. half the difference between a number and three ½(x-3) c. the quotient of seven and a number 7/x 5. Discuss formulas: A = lw (Area of a Rectangle) P = 2l + 2w (Perimeter of a Rectangle) D = rt (Distance equals rate times time) C = np (Cost equals number of items times price per item) 6. Practice writing equations: a. Find the area and perimeter of a rectangle with length 4 and width w. A = 4w, P = 2(4) + 2w = 8 + 2w b. You buy 6 pencils at m cents each and 4 notebooks at n cents each. How much did you spend? C = 6m + 4n c. You travel 40 miles per hour for x hours. How far did you travel? D = 40x 7. Class work as appropriate. 8. HW: p. 16 – 18 as appropriate. Lesson Assessments: Classwork, Homework. Topic: 1-5 Translating Sentences into Equations Objective: To translate word sentences into equations Core Content for Assessment: MA-11-1.1.1a Students will use order relations (less than, greater than, equal to) to represent problems using real numbers Materials/Resources Textbook, Translating Memory Cards Procedures: 1. Warm Up 2. Check HW 3. Translating sentences: point out that sentences can usually be translated in order and is almost always =. 4. Practice: a. Twice the sum of a number and twelve is forty 2(x+12)=40 b. When a number is multiplied by four and the result is decreased by five, the final result is nine. 4x – 5 = 9 c. Eight less than a number is 9. x – 8 = 9 d. 4 4 + 5 + x = 19 5 Perimeter = 19 x e. The distance traveled in 4 hours was 180 miles 180 = r(4) = 4r 5. Activity: Translation Memory Game. Match the sentence with the equation. Turn all cards face down. Turn over two at a time. If they are equivalent, remove the match and record on the worksheet. Alternate directions: Cut out equations and words and pass out to students. Then have them walk around the room and find their match. Display matches in front of class 6. HW from pages 20-22 as appropriate. Lesson Assessments: Warm up, homework check, memory game check.
