Parts Of Speech
Noun - person, place, or thing (idea = abstract noun – love, hate, anger, peace)
-Common = student, city, fish, and many more….
-Proper = Russell, Enumclaw, Chinook, and many more….
Pronoun - takes the place of a noun
-he, she, it, they, we, I, us, you, me, and more….and types.
Verb -Action – what the noun or pronoun does = running, walking, sitting, talking,
and more…
-Being – is, are, was, were, am, be, been
-Auxillary (Helping) Verbs – would, could, should, can, may, might, will,
and more
Adjective – describes a noun
-“red” car, “slow” horse, “young” student, “old” teacher
Preposition – shows the relationship between nouns or pronouns
-of, with, by, at, under, over, around, beneath
Prepositional Phrase = preposition with its noun or pronoun
-of cake, with him, by the store, under the desk, over the hill, around me
Adverbs – describes a verb, adjective, or an adverb
-usually ends in “ly” = quickly, slowly, really, fast, very
Conjunction – connects things = and, or, but, because, and many more…
(Subordinating, Coordinating,Corelative)
Article – a, an, the
Verbals
Infinitive = action verb with the preposition “to”
-to run, to walk, to fly, to talk
Infinitive Phrase: To be polite, I chuckled at all of her jokes.
Participle = action verb functioning as an adjective
-running deer, falling rock, swimming fish
Participial Phrase: Chugging down main street, our truck began to fall apart.
Gerund = verb functioning as noun
-I like fishing. Hunting is fun. Studying gets better grades.
Gerund Phrase: Doing homework after school will get you better grades.
