could he/she still survive? Explain your answer
If the shipwreck crew drank only salt water to
survive they would still die. This is due to
diffusion. Diffusion is when molecules move from
an area of high concentration to low concentration
through a semi-permeable membrane. If the
crewmembers drink salt water the high concentration
of salt water will be outside the cell. Low
concentration will be inside the cell. So the salt
will go into the cell while the high concentration
of water inside the cell will move out causing the
cell to shrink. Without the water the cells will
die.
If the cells die, then the person dies.

If strawberries are sprinkled with sugar, then
after a few minutes the strawberries will be
covered with juice. This is because of osmosis.
Osmosis is the diffusion of water molecules where
molecules move from an area of high concentration
to low. The high concentration of water is inside
the strawberries so water moves out of the
strawberries, which has the lower concentration.
The water mixes with the sugar and makes it juicy.
