-Geography is the study of the earth and of the ways people live and work on it. -Geographia is the Greek and for geography, which means “a description of the earth.” -Geographers are people who study the earth and it’s relationship with people -Geographers center around 5 main themes: 1) location, 2) place, 3) human/environment interaction, 4) movement, and 5) region. -The precise position of a place on the earth is called the absolute location. -The equator is an imaginary line that circles the earth midway between the North and South Pole. The equator divides the earth into hemispheres, meaning two halves. (Northern and Southern) -Latitude (parallel) lines circle the earth parallel to the equator, and measure distance north and south. Important examples: 1) Tropic of Cancer located at 23 ½ degrees N 2) Tropic of Capricorn located at 23 ½ deg. S -Longitude (meridians) lines run from pole to pole and measures distances east and west. Measuring begins at the Prime Meridian at 0 degrees longitude. The prime meridian runs through Greenwich, England. -Lines of latitude and longitude cross one another to form a grid system. -Thinking of a place and its relation to places around it is known as relative location. -Place asks the question, “What is it like there?” -Human/Environment Interaction simply describes what the relationship is between people and their environment. -Movement describes how people and places are connected. -For the most part people are interdependent, meaning they rely on one another. -Areas of land is often divided into regions, and two examples are uniform and functional regions. -Uniform example: The Sun Belt in the U.S. -Functional example: The Atlanta Metropolitan area
