Science Test 2 – How does the body transport materials1 1. (2 p) Is energy important for the transportation of materials in the body? Explain. The energy is very important, because only diffusion of small particles happens without the use of energy, all the other type of transportantion of materials in the body require energy. 2. (3.5 p) Can you make a diagram of the blood components and their functions? Plasma: liquid part (50%). Red Blood Cells: transport oxygen and carbon dioxide. White Blood Cells: defends the body from infections. Paltelets: first line of defense in closing wounds. 3. (2 p) Identify the chambers of the heart. Left Atrium, Left Ventricle Right Atrium, Right Ventricle. 4. (2 p) What is the importance of the left and the right sides of the heart? The Systemic circulation departs from the left side of the heart, the pulmonary circulation departs from the right side of the heart. 5. (2 p) Mary is not feeling well, so her mother took her to the doctor. The doctor ordered a blood test. In the test, it was found that Mary’s hemoglobin level is low. Can you determine at least 2 consequences of that condition? Low hemoglobin levels determines that the transportation of oxygen and carbon dioxide are defficient, so the energy levels are low in the body and the elimination of wastes is also defficient. 6. (2 p) The oxygen is a gas that is abundant in the air, but that is toxic to living things. Can you explain why do living things use it? Oxygen is a necessary gas to obtain large amounts of energy for cells. 7. (3 p) Find the correct sentences about the circulatory system. a. The heart is a pump formed by two chambers and four veins. b. The heart is an organ formed by four chambers that pump blood to the rest of the body and to the lungs. c. Arteries are blood vessels that leave the heart to the rest of the body. d. The capillaries are the blood vessels that carry only white blood cells in the body. e. The veins are the blood vessels that carry blood from the body back to the heart and then to the lungs to be oxygenated. f. The blood is formed by plasma (solid part), cells (liquid part) and platelets. 8. (2 p) Using your science knowledge, can you analyze what is the relation between the respiratory and circulatory systems? The circulatory system transports the blood cells, one of them is the red blood cells, that transport the oxygen and carbon dioxide obtained by the respiratory system. 9. (1.5 p) Fill in the blanks: The circulatory system transports oxygen, nutrients and wastes through the body in the blood. BONUS QUESTIONS Analyze this picture and infer all the information you can from it. 1. Pulmonary circulation from the right side of the heart to the lungs. 2. The exchange of gases occurs in the blood in the lungs. 3. The oxygenated blood returns to the left side of the heart to be pumped to the rest of the body. 4. Oxygenated blood is transported to the rest of the body through the arteries. 5. Oxygenated blood is delivered to the cells by the capillaries and there is an exchange of oxygen for carbon dioxide. 6. The unoxygenated blood returns to the heart in the veins.
