Free firmware update offers both Dugan automixing and Sound Devices MixAssist for the 633
mixer/recorder; Further enhancements available for entire 6-Series line
REEDSBURG, WI, FEBRUARY 22, 2017 — Sound Devices, LLC announces that its popular
633 mixer/recorder now offers two powerful, high-performing automatic mixing options, Dugan
automixing and Sound Devices MixAssist™. The two well-regarded automixing algorithms are
available at no additional cost to 633 owners with the release of Firmware Version 4.50. With
this firmware update, the 688 mixer/recorder with its SL-6 powering and wireless system
accessory now supports SuperSlot™ integration with Sennheiser EK-6042 wireless, two-channel
slot-in receivers.
Sound Devices added Dugan’s well-known automatic mic mixing to its 688 mixer/recorder in
2016, making it the first field mixer to incorporate the technology. The inclusion of the Dugan
Speech System™ and MixAssist to the compact 633 mixer makes it the go-to tool for more
portable production applications. The new feature provides automixing for up to six audio
channels.

Getting a great production mix can be challenging in many field applications. Unscripted dialog,
multiple characters, and wide-and-tight multi-camera coverage often require the use of wireless
lavalier mics and multi-track recording. In these situations, auto mixers improve intelligibility,
reduce noise and reverberation, and maintain consistent overall gain as microphones are turned
on and off.
Dugan automixing is widely used in broadcast television applications, in dialogue recording for
TV and motion picture production, and in house of worship (HOW) applications. It also is a
good choice for teleconferencing, video trucks, and theater applications with multiple wireless
microphones on stage. Dugan automixing takes over the nerve-wracking job of cueing mics in
and out, freeing up the location recordist to pay more attention to the actual mix balance. Mixes
are cleaner and this post-production time is reduced.
MixAssist automatically attenuates the level of inputs that are not active and helps maintain
consistent background sound levels regardless of the number of open microphones. Comb
filtering and phasing artifacts are also reduced when multiple mics pick up the same sound

source by intelligently attenuating redundant mics. The end user can define the amount of offattenuation MixAssist uses. MixAssist can be used for mixing many speech-specific
applications, including reality TV productions, broadcast TV programs, wireless multi-mic
dialogue recording for TV and motion picture production, sound applications for various
corporate needs, HOW capture, and more.
For the 688, the v4.50 update also adds support for Sennheiser EK-6042 two-channel receivers
when slotted-into the Sound Devices SL-6 powering and wireless accessory, which uses Sound
Devices’ SuperSlot™ technology. SuperSlot is the industry’s first non-proprietary, open wireless
control and interfacing standard, developed by Sound Devices in collaboration with a number of
leading wireless manufacturers - Lectrosonics, Wisycom, Sennheiser, and Audio Limited.

v4.50 update offers several feature enhancements for the Sound Devices 688, 664 and 633
mixer/recorders.

The 633 features three high-bandwidth mic/line inputs on XLR inputs, each complete with
phantom power, high-pass filter, analog input limiter and variable pan, plus three additional linelevel TA3 inputs for added flexibility in complex productions. All inputs are assignable, pre- or
post-fade, to six-output buses: left/right plus Aux 1-4.
For recording, the 633 offers 10-track, 24-bit, 48 kHz uncompressed WAV recording to SD and
CompactFlash memory cards. All common sampling rates are supported, including 192 kHz on
up to six tracks. The 633 features comprehensive metadata editing, sound report creation, an
Ambient™ timecode generator and reader, a two-second, power-on-to-record ability called
QuickBoot™, and PowerSafe™, a built-in, 10-second power reserve to protect against data loss
from inadvertent power loss.
