... prions—despite the fact that their best-known member causes a rare, deadly brain-wasting scourge in humans—can also be good citizens in the life of a cell. In 1982, Stanley Prusiner, a biochemist at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), isolated the first prion as the cause of lethal s ...

Algorithms and a Software Application for the Discovery of Heparin

... The first step of this project is a chemical one – examine a group of known heparinbinding proteins and find common subsequences of amino acids that may be an indicator of heparin-binding ability. An algorithm is then developed to search for these sequences given arbitrary proteins as input. The alg ...

... 【RESULTS AND DISCUSSION】 Figure 1 shows the STM images of the (CH3S)2 molecules on Cu(111) and Ag(111) obtained before and after irradiation with 532 nm (2.3 eV) light. After irradiation, some molecules had broken into two identical ball-shaped protrusions. The S-S bond of a single (CH3S)2 molecule ...

... The most frequently used cell-free translation systems consist of extracts from rabbit reticulocytes and Escherichia coli. All are prepared as crude extracts containing all the macromolecular components (70S or 80S ribosomes, tRNAs, aminoacyl-tRNA synthetases, initiation, elongation and termination ...

... There are two competing approaches to attack protein-protein docking problem: i) Automated, ii) VR-based. Several research groups are working on automated docking [Morris et al. 1999; Hart and Read 2004] which can be reformulated as an optimization problem. The goal is to minimize binding energy of ...

QPNC-PAGE

QPNC-PAGE, or quantitative preparative native continuous polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, is a high-resolution technique applied in biochemistry and bioinorganic chemistry to separate proteins by isoelectric point. This standardized variant of native gel electrophoresis is used by biologists to isolate active or native metalloproteins in biological samples and to resolve properly and improperly folded metal cofactor-containing proteins or protein isoforms in complex protein mixtures.
