... BCP offers the ability to further tailor the optical properties. One approach is to employ high index nanoparticle additives which are coated with a surfactant layer and selectively incorporated into one of the domains. For example, we have sequestered 4 nm diameter CdSe particles of high refractive ...

... The application of chirped Bragg gratings to dispersion compensation is carried out preferably for each individual wavelength-division-multiplexing (WDM) channel taken one at a time rather than by attempting to use the technique to compensate over the entire useful bandwidth of the fiber at once. Fo ...

... and optical [25] beams with an extra azimuthal phase dependence exp(imφ ), called vortex beams, have a helicoidal wavefront and carry orbital angular momentum. This feature of angular momentum transport allows the beam to exert a torque to rotate an object. Acoustic vortex beams were analyzed beyond ...

... "sandwich" was supported on a horizontal open box-like frame-work of steel channel beams which were spot welded to the top of a low flat steel table. A zinc alloy (Kirksite) was cast and machined into a flat slab 56 in. long and 26.25 in. wide. It was four in. thick. The slab, weighing about 1400 lb ...

... Population Inversion Schemes The efficiency of a laser is related to its ability to sustain a population inversion and regenerate a population in the low energy state to initiate a new pumping cycle. As you may see a 2 level laser would be very inefficient, because a population inversion may not be ...

In this way rapid relaxation or transient absorption processes can be investigated, using short-pulse lasers with the time resolutions lying in the femtosecond domain [3, 4]. ... We can learn a lot about a light source by studying its spectrum. For example, the spectrum of the sun is composed of a complete “rainbow” crossed by dark lines due to absorption of certain wavelengths by the sun’s atmosphere. An excited gas at low pressure produces an emission spectrum, bright line ...

Several schemes can be implemented based on the same idea, but in all cases the ultimate resolution, ␭ / 2, is limited by the wavelength of the illumination. Thus, reducing the wavelength is a direct path to ...

Harold Hopkins (physicist)

Harold Horace Hopkins FRS (1918–1994) was a renowned British physicist. His Wave Theory of Aberrations, (published by Oxford University Press 1950), is central to all modern optical design and provides the mathematical analysis which enables the use of computers to create the wealth of high quality lenses available today. In addition to his theoretical work, his many inventions are in daily use throughout the world. These include zoom lenses, coherent fibre-optics and more recently the rod-lens endoscopes which 'opened the door' to modern key-hole surgery. He was the recipient of many of the world's most prestigious awards and was twice nominated for a Nobel Prize. His citation on receiving the Rumford Medal from the Royal Society in 1984 stated: ""In recognition of his many contributions to the theory and design of optical instruments, especially of a wide variety of important new medical instruments which have made a major contribution to clinical diagnosis and surgery.""
