... The work described in the remaining pages of this thesis is only a part of what the whole PhD experience is about – the easiest part to write about. Trying to describe this experience is a next-to-impossible task; so I will not attempt such a feat. It suffices to say that all the hyperbolic clichés ...

Furthermore, more sensitive detectors may make the detection of GWs much easier as an engineering project, possibly using configurations that are far more compact than the LIGO type systems. We have shown8 both theoretically and experimentally that incorporating ...

The next generation of adaptive optics systems should be substantially smaller and less expensive in order to facilitate widespread application. The goal of this thesis is the investigation of a wavefront sensorless adaptive optics system w ...

In a later monograph, he shows that this is true to a very good approximation, even in the case of strong interaction where the perturbation theory fails. ... The object stands in front of a convex mirror. Consider first the P-ray: it leaves the top of the object as a parallel ray, and when it hits the convex mirror it is reflected. The reflected ray passes through the focal point of the spherical mirror. Even though the ray would be reflected up and away ...

Harold Hopkins (physicist)

Harold Horace Hopkins FRS (1918–1994) was a renowned British physicist. His Wave Theory of Aberrations, (published by Oxford University Press 1950), is central to all modern optical design and provides the mathematical analysis which enables the use of computers to create the wealth of high quality lenses available today. In addition to his theoretical work, his many inventions are in daily use throughout the world. These include zoom lenses, coherent fibre-optics and more recently the rod-lens endoscopes which 'opened the door' to modern key-hole surgery. He was the recipient of many of the world's most prestigious awards and was twice nominated for a Nobel Prize. His citation on receiving the Rumford Medal from the Royal Society in 1984 stated: ""In recognition of his many contributions to the theory and design of optical instruments, especially of a wide variety of important new medical instruments which have made a major contribution to clinical diagnosis and surgery.""
