Development of a Tm3+-doped Fluoride Glass - DORAS
Development of a Tm3+-doped Fluoride Glass - DORAS

... The development of a fluoride fibre laser for hydrocarbon gas sensing is discussed. The use of a fibre laser as a source for optical sensing has many advantages including small size and ease of adaptability into industrial systems. The fibre laser constructed in this work has an operating wavelength ...

... As the obscuration ratio increases, and the size of the central core of the diffraction pattern decreases, less light is contained within the central core. Figure 9 gives a plot of the encircled energy distribution as a function of obscuration ratio. The curves are normalized so that for each case t ...

... wave (SW). The large nonlinearity was obtained in an atomic system driven by two counter propagating coupling fields which form a SW if the two counter propagating coupling fields have the same frequency [11, 12]. Interaction of the SW with the atomic coherent medium results into an electromagnetica ...

... The correspondence between operators and physical quantities is crucial within the context of quantum mechanics. Since any physically measurable quantity must always be real, the eigenvalues of every quantum operator corresponding to it should also belong to the real set. This leads to one of the ba ...

Harold Hopkins (physicist)

Harold Horace Hopkins FRS (1918–1994) was a renowned British physicist. His Wave Theory of Aberrations, (published by Oxford University Press 1950), is central to all modern optical design and provides the mathematical analysis which enables the use of computers to create the wealth of high quality lenses available today. In addition to his theoretical work, his many inventions are in daily use throughout the world. These include zoom lenses, coherent fibre-optics and more recently the rod-lens endoscopes which 'opened the door' to modern key-hole surgery. He was the recipient of many of the world's most prestigious awards and was twice nominated for a Nobel Prize. His citation on receiving the Rumford Medal from the Royal Society in 1984 stated: ""In recognition of his many contributions to the theory and design of optical instruments, especially of a wide variety of important new medical instruments which have made a major contribution to clinical diagnosis and surgery.""
