BISHOP PROFILE
“The saying is sure: whoever aspires to the office of bishop desires a noble task.
Now a bishop must be above reproach, married only once, temperate, sensible,
respectable, hospitable, an apt teacher, 3 not a drunkard, not violent but gentle,
not quarrelsome, and not a lover of money. 4 He must manage his own household
well, keeping his children submissive and respectful in every way— 5 for if
someone does not know how to manage his own household, how can he take care
of God’s church? 6 He must not be a recent convert, or he may be puffed up with
conceit and fall into the condemnation of the devil. 7 Moreover, he must be well
thought of by outsiders, so that he may not fall into disgrace and the snare of the
devil”. 1 Timothy 3: 1-7

The Search and Nomination Committee for election to the IV Diocesan Bishop
completed a consultation process through surveys; to define the profile of the
Bishop that the Anglican-Episcopal Church, Diocese of Venezuela needs. Clergy
and laity of congregations in the missions of the different geographical regions
that make up our Diocese participated in this process.
After completing the process, the Search and Nomination Committee is pleased
to submit the Bishop Profile to you.
The profile reaffirms a person dedicated to the pastoral action who as a
religious leader is distinguished by the preaching of the Gospel, just as the
apostles who were with the Lord and that he instituted "to send them to
preach." This heir of Paul is distinguished by keeping us "vigilant as staunch
defenders of the faith". This also manifests his persistent interest in keeping
us as Active Promoters of Anglicanism. With the same spirit, he/she will
promote, disseminate and publish the Venezuelan Anglican-Episcopal
Church, both in communities as well as in the media.
The intense life of this person is distinguished by a continuous spiritual
growth nourished by daily prayer, sustained study of the Bible and constant
contact with religious communities. He/she must be also distinguished for
the spiritual growth of the faithful, and promoter of small prayer groups
and Bible study, spiritual retreats and exercise the ministry of spiritual
renewal. With an active life in the Anglican Episcopal Church, the
candidate must feel comfortable with an Anglo-Catholic rite, historically, a
liturgy of preference in most of our diocese.
The enormous task before the Bishop demands a high academic level; must
have obtained at least a Bachelor’s Degree, and conveniently even seek a
Doctorate. With this academic level, it is a natural concern of the Bishop to
look after the education of the clergy. The Bishop, with a high academic
level, as profiled, would, of course have among his/her priorities, constant
study, spiritual, theological and professional preparation. Taking into
account the economic and political challenges of Venezuela today, the
candidate selected must be familiar with our diocese and our country, which
will provide the skills necessary to interact with our habits, customs and
national idiosyncrasy.
The bishop must also master Spanish, as well as English, which today meets
the “lingua franca” function. The pastoral work of the bishop does not
exclude other important functions for which he/she must show inclination
and skill. He/she must be able to watch over administrative functions, for
which he/she must have administrative and managerial skills and the ability
to direct and lead groups. He/she must have the ability to strengthen and
expand the church while deepening the ties with the state and other
institutions. Must have the ability to delegate tasks, create work teams
without avoiding personal responsibility. Must be aware that he/she live in
the world and that the problems that afflict humanity deserve attention and
must be sensitive to the problems and guide welfare, progress, advancement
and improvement. His/her leadership will be distinguished by its attitude as
motivator, coordinator and facilitator, among others. His/her must have
high regard for collaboration, and a transparent performance, as is required
of a positive and assertive leader. He/she must always have present: "For the
Son of man came not to be served but to serve and give his life a ransom for
many." Mark 10:45. It is impossible to do all this work in today's world,
without having modern technological means. The bishop must be in
excellent health in order to fulfill the great responsibilities of this office.
