INTEGERS INTEL
Integers are also called SIGNED NUMBERS. These numbers are
positive and negative with “0” being at the half way point. You’ve probably
seen a number line with a zero in the middle and negative numbers to the
left and positive numbers to the right. Please notice the arrows at the
ends of the line. The arrows mean that the line is infinite or goes on
forever. Here are some rules to help you work with integers.
ADDING INTEGERS
1. If the signs are the same (+, +, or -, -), simply add the numbers
together and give the sum the sign of both numbers.
2. If the signs are different (+, -, or -, +) forget the signs & simply
subtract the smaller number from the larger number and give you
answer the sign of the larger number. Example: -20 + 8=
 Forget the signs.
 Subtract 20 – 8 = 12
 Give the answer the original sign of the larger number. -12
 -20 + 8 = -12
SUBTRACTING INTEGERS
1. Change the subtraction problem to an addition problem.
2. Change the sign of the second number.
3. Follow the rules of ADDING INTEGERS. Example: -19 – 3 = ?
 Change the operation to addition. -19 +
 Change the sign of the second number. -19 + 3
 Follow the rules of addition. -19 + 3 = -16
MULTIPLYING AND DIVIDING INTEGERS
Take a breath! There are only 2 simple rules for multiplication and
division of integers.
1. If the signs are alike (+, +, or -, -), the answer is always positive.
2. If the signs are different (-, +, 0r +, -), the answer is always negative.
-3 (6) = -18
-18 / 6 = -3
-3 (-6) = 18
18 / 6 = 3
