Lesson Plan
Teacher: Ziennker-Lee
Standard:
Class: OCS Applied science
Topic: Cell theory
Bio1.1: Understand the relationship between the structures and functions of cells and
their organelles.
Day 1: Cell theory (vocabulary: microscope, Zaccharias Janssen, Robert Hooke, Van
Leeuwenhoek, Matthias Schleiden, Theodor Schwann and Rudolf Virchow )
Daily Instructional Objectives: Students will be able to:
1. describe what each person did for the cell theory.
2. list the parts of the cell theory.
Activator:
1. Warm up: in PowerPoint or listed in warm-ups in Moodle
Itinerary :
1. warm-up: have students answer warm up questions about
microspose/telescopes.
2. Introduction to cell theory: Explain to students that those microscopes
are considered “technology” and helped make the discovery of cells a
reality. Stress to students that this will be more of a “history” lesson and
they will be learning about different scientists. You can talk about how
these will be white males…there was discrimination even back then against
non-whites and females.
3. Direct instruction:
a. Hand out “cell theory student note sheet”. Students will fill in the
scientists name and the blanks for the how they contributed to the
discovery of cells. They will also write down the three parts of the cell
theory at the end of the presentation.
b. Open up the PowerPoint “cell theory” and go through presentation
making sure students are writing down what is underlined/highlighted in
PowerPoint
4. Differentiation – Show “cell theory” unitedstreaming video clip.
5. Independent work: hand out “cell theory study guide”. Go over the answers
when the students are done.
7. Closure - Five finger summary. Can be collected for a grade.
