Teachers Guide Card Sort The ‘Understanding exam questions card sort’ is a matching activity which would need to be printed as a resource (possibly laminated for longevity) for students to pair up the command words with their definitions. This activity allows students to see the exact definitions for the command words without needing to write their own definitions. This could be used as a starter activity to introduce the words to a class. PowerPoint The PowerPoint could make up the majority of the lesson. Go through with the students the criteria for answering a question based on the command words. The final slide gives a list of the command words and asks students to create questions involving those words. Examples of these questions could be based on real life scenarios to develop student confidence in answering, for example: COMPARE the dangers of smoking to the dangers of alcohol. CALCULATE how many hours there are in 1 year. EVALUATE the advantages and disadvantages of renewable fuels. EXPLAIN how a new species arises. Or the questions could have a more exam style focus such as: DESCRIBE what the table/graph shows. USE your knowledge of genetics to explain why blue eyes are a recessive trait. SUGGEST why the Haber process is an example of good atom economy. STATE the steps of a clinical drugs trial. Allow students to create questions which include one of the command questions, neighbours answer the questions, then the question setter could mark the answer based against the criteria in the PowerPoint. The slides could be provided to students to ensure they mark correctly.
