Eduardo Fernández, pianist
Biography
Spanish pianist, Eduardo Fernández,
was acclaimed by critics as the “most
promising young Spanish pianist” after
being selected by the prestigious
international music magazine Scherzo
to perform at the concert of its 20th Anniversary in 2005. His vast repertoire extends from
baroque to contemporary, including all of the etudes by Rachmaninoff and Chopin, the three
sonatas of Chopin, the two concertos of both Brahms and Chopin, and the four Rachmaninoff
concertos. His first CD, featuring the Suite Iberia by Albéniz, was release in late Fall 2010, to
high critical acclaim.
Born in 1981, Eduardo Fernández’s grandfather began to teach him the piano at the age of 4,
resulting in his first public concert one year later. He studied with the prestigious Spanish
pedagogue Carmen Aguirre, former pupil of Cortot and Tagliaferro, at the Conservatorio de
Alcalá de Henares, and with Almudena Cano at the Real Conservatorio de Música de Madrid,
where he graduated in piano, chamber music, accompaniment, and clarinet. For his
achievements in piano he received honors from the Fundación Guerrero. He finished with a
post-graduate degree in piano. Mr. Fernández also studied Spanish music with Esteban
Sánchez.
Fernández has toured his native country extensively and with great successes in all the major
Spanish concert halls, including the Auditorio Nacional de Madrid, Teatro Real, Palau de la
Musica de Barcelona, Teatro de la Zarzuela de Madrid, Auditorio Manuel de Falla de Granada
and other important concert halls throughout Europe (Austria, Italy, France, Switzerland,
Denmark, Estonia, Romania, and others), Central America (Panama), and South America
(Argentina, Chile). He has performed in prestigious international festivals including the Ciclo
“Scherzo” de Jóvenes Intérpretes, Festival Internacional de Musica y Danza de Granada,
Kuressaare Kammerfest, Música en los Reales Sitios, Festival de Deiá, Festival de Música
Contemporánea de Madrid, El Último Piano Español in Madrid, Twestival2009, and he has given
concert tours with the support of Jeunesses Musicales International and the Spanish Ministry of
Culture. He has performed as soloist with orchestras in Spain and abroad under the direction of
such conductors as Marzio Conti, Jesús Amigo, José Fabra, Joan Cerveró, Roberto Montenegro,
José Miguel Rodilla, and Luis Carlos Ortiz.
He also performed at the 10th Anniversary of the Ciclo Grandes Intérpretes of the Scherzo
Foundation, as well as in the concert of 50th Anniversary of the Fundación Juan March and in
the 60th Anniversary of Jeunesses Musicales International at the Centro Cultural Manuel de Falla
in Granada.
He has performed several times for Spanish National Radio (RNE) and Catalunya Musica. In
2006, commemorating the Mozart year, he performed the Concerto K 453 in a live radio
broadcast for the Palau de la Musica de Barcelona over Catalunya Musica, with the Andorra
National Classic Orchestra under the direction of Marzio Conti.
In July 2007, he played for the first time in public the Suite Iberia by Albéniz at the Deiá
International Music Festival. It was a great success, acclaimed by critics and the public alike,
following the tradition of the greatest Spanish pianists like Alicia de Larrocha, Rafael Orozco or
Esteban Sánchez. His interpretation of Spanish music has been praised again and again, as
when he won the “Extraordinary Prize” of the Fundación Guerrero and the Manuel de Falla
Award in Granada.
In November 2007, Fernández played a recital at the Madrid’s Teatro de la Zarzuela for the
Scherzo Foundation Concert Series, the most important concert series in Spain. In February
2009 he made his debut in the Main Hall of the Teatro Real de Madrid with the Madrid
Symphony Orchestra in the commemoration of the centenary of Albéniz’s death. During April
and May 2009 he performed in a new Teatro de la Zarzuela production which included his own
piano transcriptions of popular themes from different Zarzuelas. Future engagements include
concert tours in Argentina, Chile, and China, and his first appearances in Russia and the Czech
Republic.
In February 2011, Australian composer Phillip Wilcher dedicated his “3 Etudes for Left Hand
Solo” to Mr. Fernandez. 2012 included recital tours to China, Russia, and Luxembourg, and he
plans to release his second recording, this time of the last opuses of Johannes Brahms, in 2012.
