Physical Properties
L.G: I can differentiate between the different physical and chemical properties that
we use to describe matter.
Matter is anything that has mass & volume (Takes up space).
Everything is matter except energy (for example) electricity/lights
Physical Properties: a characteristic/description that would help identify a substance (using 5
senses)
PHYSICAL PROPERTY
Color
DESCRIPTION
What color is it?
Texture
What does it feel like?
Odour
What does it smell like? Spicy, sweet, burnt, etc.
Taste
What does it taste like?
Lustre
How shiny is it?
Clarity
Hardness
Malleability
Ductility
Melting and Boiling
Points
Crystal Form
EXAMPLE
Blue, red, yellow, black, white,
etc.
Rough, smooth, gritty, etc.
Sweet, sour, salty, bitter
Gold has lustre; concrete is
dull
Can you see through it? Transparent (clear),
translucent, opaque.
A substance’s ability to Diamond is harder than glass.
resist being scratched.
How well a substance
Aluminum foil, gold, and tin
can be pounded or
are all malleable substances.
rolled into sheets.
Any solid that can be
Copper wire.
stretched into a long
wire.
The temperature at
Water turns from solid to

point.
The regular or irregular Salt crystals are tiny cubes.
pattern in a solid.
Solubility
Viscosity
Density
The ability for a
substance to dissolve in
a liquid.
The resistance of a fluid
to flow.
Amount of mass in a
given volume of a
substance.
Salt dissolves in water and is
therefore soluble. Pepper
does not.
Syrup has a high viscosity
compared to water.
Water is denser than oil but
gold is denser than water.
Chemical Properties: Describes the ability of a substance to change into a
new substance or substances.
Property
Combustible
Forms gas when heated
Reacts with acid
Reacts with water
Emits heat/light
Light Sensitivity
Description
Ability to react with oxygen to
produce carbon dioxide and
water
When substance is heated, a
gas is formed
Ability to produce a chemical
change when combined with
acid substances
Ability to produce a chemical
change when combined with
water
When combined with another
substance it produces light or
heat
Ability to be changed by the
energy in light
