land
patterns in
the world?

geography
into 5 themes
or viewpoints
Geography is the
study of the earth. That is a
big job!

5 Windows
IF YOU THINK OF
THE 5 THEMES OF
GEOGRAPHY AS 5
WINDOWS YOU CAN
LOOK THROUGH TO
SEE THE SAME
PLACE.
IF YOU LOOKED AT
THE SAME PLACE
THROUGH 5
WINDOWS, YOU
WOULD HAVE 5
DIFFERENT
PERSPECTIVES OR
VIEWPOINTS OF
THE PLACE.
THE FIVE THEMES OF
GEOGRAPHY
 Movement
 Regions
 Human-Environment Interaction
 Location
 Place
Movement
 The world is
constantly changing
 The world is affected
by the movement of
people, goods, and
ideas
 Movement answers,
“How is this place
changing and why?”
MOVEMENT
 Movement of people, goods, and
ideas.
 Human
Movement- think of someone
who you know who has moved to a new
town, state, or country.
Why
did they move?
 Movement
of Goods
How
do goods (things) move?
Imports-__________________
Exports-__________________
 Ideas
and Information Movement- list at
least 5 ways ideas or information move
Movement Activity
 How many of the items in the classroom have been
manufactured in another country?
 Find the origin of manufacture of your shirt or
jacket. Ask someone you trust to tell you what the
tag says.
Europe
USA
Mexico
or
Central
America
Africa
Asia
Indonesia
Other
Did anyone go to stores in these areas and buy their shirt? How did you get it? How it
it get to the place you bought it?
Regions
 A region is an area of the world that has
similar, unifying characteristics.
 The characteristics may be physical,
human, or cultural.
 Region answer, “What common
features does this area share, and
how is it different from other
areas?”
REGIONS
 The common feature can be
physical such as landforms
5 Physical Regions of the US
–
1. Pacific Coast and
Intermountain Region
a) includes mountains along
coast
2. Rocky Mountains
a) highest peaks in the U.S,
above tree level
3. Great Plains
a) flat grassland with little
trees
4. Appalachian Mountains
a) lower and less rugged
than the Rockies
5. Atlantic Coastal Plain
a) flat lowlands along the
coast

REGIONS
 The features can be anything
that one area shares either
cultural, social, or
organizational.
 Examples: counties,
 Cell coverage, zip codes,
 Area codes
Processing- Turn and Talk
What are the big ideas in
geography?
2. What alternative besides
windows could we look
through to show relationship
of the 5 themes?
3. How can you compare the
word “import” and ‘export”
using an analogy?
1.
Brain Break –
1. Trading Places: Stand behind your
chair. I will call out a trait and
everyone who has that trait must
change places with someone else
(students who do not have the trait
stay where they are).
• Everyone with curly hair.
• Everyone who ate cereal for breakfast.
• Everyone who is wearing stripes.
• Everyone who is left-handed
• Everyone who is wearing red.
Practice with Movement and Region
 Pairs will compete to demonstrate knowledge of
content.
 Using the graphic organizer, brainstorm people,
goods, and ideas that demonstrate movement.
 Brainstorm several regions that could be defined by
similar characteristics.
Scenario Exit Slip

GEOGRAPHY

 Place
Human-Environment Interaction- guided
notes
 People
interact with
their environment in many
ways.
 Some are
helpful ways
like building a bridge to
cross a body of water.
 Some are harmful like
cutting down all the trees in
an area to make room for
more building.
 People also adapt to an area
based on the environment
such as wearing warmer
clothes if the temperature is
cold.

Location
 Location asks the question “Where is it?”
 Two Types of Location
 1.
Absolute Location is measured in latitude
and longitude coordinates.
 Latitude lines measure distance ___________
to __________.
 Longitude lines measure distance _______ to
_________.
 2. Relative Location- location which is
relative to some other place. TN is __ to KY
LOCATION
 Absolute Location  Relative Location

Latitude and 84o West
Longitude

Location Think Pair Share
 Think of a place you have always wanted to visit.
Describe its location in terms of another place.
Continue to give clues until your partner correctly
guesses your location.
 Example: I’ve always wanted to go to a place that is
a state in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. It is
directly west of California.
Jigsaw Read
In a group of 4, you will be given one of four articles,
read the article as a group and discuss how it relates
to one of the 5 themes of geography.
Fill out the graphic organizer for your assigned
article.
You will have 7 minutes to read and 3 minutes to
complete the graphic organizer.
Share findings from your graphic organizer for the
class to fill out on theirs.
Discussion Questions
• How can you compare Absolute and
Relative Location?
• How can you distinguish between
longitude and latitude lines?
• How can longitude and latitude lines
identify exact location? What situations
are these important?
Practice Location
Use either Absolute or
Relative Location or Where in
the World are you Vacationing
to demonstrate your
knowledge of finding location.
