Where are we?
• Absolute Location
– A latitude and longitude
(global location) or a
street address (local
location).
– Pittsburg is 37o North
Latitude and 95o West
Longitude.
– The White House is
located at 1600
Pennsylvania Ave.
• Relative Location
– Described by landmarks,
time, direction or distance
from one place to
another.
– Pittsburg is in the
southeast corner of KS.
PLACE
What is it like there, what kind of place is it?
• Human
• Physical

• What are the main
languages, customs, and
beliefs.
• How many people live,
work, and visit a place.
• Landforms (mountains,
rivers, etc.), climate,
vegetation, wildlife, soil,
etc.
HUMAN-ENVIRONMENT
INTERACTION
• How do humans and the environment affect
each other?
– We depend on it.
• People in Southeastern KS depend on the
Ozark Aquifer for their water.
– We modify it.
• People modify our environment by
heating and cooling buildings for comfort.
– We adapt to it.
• We adapt to the environment by wearing
clothing suitable for summer (shorts) and
winter (coats), rain and shine.
MOVEMENT
• How are people, goods, ideas moved from place
to place?
– Human Movement
• trucks, trains, planes
– Information Movement
• phones, computer (email), mail
– Idea Movement
• How do fads move from place to place?
TV, internet, radio,
magazines, etc.
REGIONS
• Regions have a unifying characteristics—climate,
landforms, history, population, etc.
• Main types:
– Formal Regions—have official boundaries, like countries,
states, cities, etc.
– Functional Regions—defined by their connections, like a
cell phone coverage area, newspaper service area
– Vernacular Regions—are perceived regions, like the
Middle East, the South, the Midwest

• If you can’t remember what they are

• M – Movement
• R – Regions
• HE – Human Environment interaction
• L – Location
• P - Place
Your assignment
• Describe you and your family using the 5 Themes of Geography(you need at
least one photo/illustration for each theme).
• Use all 5 themes—see next slide for help.
• Display your work neatly in a graphic organizer. (Include last name(s)/names of
family members in the center shape.)
• Neatness & appearance is important!
• Use ink for text; colored pencil for color—erase all pencil marks.
Helpful Hints!
• Location—What is the absolute & relative locations of where
you and your family live?
• Place—What are the human characteristics of your family?
(language(s), customs, belief, hobbies, etc); What are the physical
characteristics of your family? (hair/eye color; physical build,
etc.)
• Human-Environment Interaction—How do you and your family
affect the environment; how does the environment affect you?
• Movement—How do you and your family move; how do you
get ideas, etc?
• Region—What are the similar characteristics of your family
members (physical and human) ?
