Career Path of CFO (Chief Financial Officer) Jobs
The Chief Financial Officer job is a position in executive level that is in charge of the
strategic planning and the financial operations within an organization. Regarded as
second-in-command to the CEO (Chief Executive Officer), the CFOs in some companies
are on the same level as the CEOs because both positions are focused on operational
performance.
What Does The Job Involve
Chief Financial Officer jobs involve the exercise of leadership in the financial functions
of a company. This includes specifically budget creation and administration, investment
strategies, risk management, fundraising campaigns, and presiding over mergers and
acquisitions. In addition to these, some CFOs are involved in responsibilities that go
beyond in-house growth and investment. Included here are the programs promoting
community economic development through charitable contributions, education, and
internship programs.
Typical Duties and Responsibilities
As in all executive level jobs, Chief Financial Officers are focused typically on long term
objectives as well as on day to day company operations. Many CFO jobs should be
proficient in the management of the daily operations that greatly affect the organization’s
financial stability, like cost control, loss prevention, allocation of materials, and billing
and collection function. The CFO in a company is a significant figure in the creation of
policies and procedures within the financial division.
The Career Path
If you want to be in the position of a CFO, a great deal of knowledge regarding Finance
and Accounting is needed. You should also acquire an extensive managerial experience.
Usually, the career path starts with a college education in line with Accounting or
Business. Then, you need to find work in the corporate world, in the business planning or
financial department of a large corporation, preferably. Supplementing your education
with managerial training can be helpful; it can get you on that career track. Additionally,
to achieve the CFO position, you must stand out from the rest. Some times you have to
decide to change organizations while you are in the process of moving upwards.
Depending on the career path you have decided to take, your degree may specifically
vary, but one typical choice is Accounting. It is a great help if you can become a Certified
Public Accountant (CPA). Many CFOs pursue a master’s degree while they are moving
up the ranks.
Advancement Opportunities
When you graduate, naturally you would want to apply for a position in a larger
organization where you expect to find plenty of advancement opportunities. This first job
may not be the job where you can become a CFO, but this is where you start climbing up
and gaining promotions.
As you are being promoted, and have gained managerial experience, there is an
opportunity for you to climb further. You may find another business that will make you
an offer for a great opportunity. It is a fact that businesses fill up vacant executive
positions from within the organization, but there are cases where individuals get to that
level only when they change organizations. That does not mean that you are not being
loyal to the company, rather you just believe that you got to accept whatever good
opportunity is offered, or comes your way.
