A WORLD OF FISH
Angel Fish
Fish Selection
Feeding
Angels are one of the most
beautiful Cichlids and are
commonly found in striped,
marbled silver, gold and
black. Despite their beauty
and delicate flowing fins,
Angels will eat smaller fish
and should not be kept with
them. A community
aquarium with larger Angels could include large
Rainbow Fish, some Barbs, Gouramis,
scavengers and algae eaters. Do not include large
aggressive cichlids.
Feed small angels a good
quality flake food with a
small amount of frozen
brine shrimp and
bloodworms every other
day. Consider switching the
fish to small pellets when
they reach three inches in
diameter and to large pellets
when they reach five inches.
Breeding
Angel Fish are one of the few Cichlids that do not
move the gravel and seem to appreciate live
plants and attractive landscaping in their
aquarium. Please give them plenty of room, to
avoid stunting their long fins. Plan on keeping
these beauties in forty or more gallon tanks with
large logs, rocks and decorations.
Finding a pair that will breed should be left to the
dedicated few that can devote an entire fish room
with several large aquariums to the task. Like all
cichlids, angels lay their eggs on a flat surface
like slate or the leaves of an Amazon Sword
plant. With some practice, the parents will raise
the babies although it is usually easier to move
the fry to a bare breeder tank with a sponge filter
and raise them by hand with baby brine shrimp
and powder food.
Water Conditions
Reading
Keep water conditions neutral and maintain a
temperature in the mid to high seventies with a
high quality heater. Change 20 % regularly.
Books covering the care of angelfish are available
at A World of Fish; feel free to explore.
