In August of 2000 I graduated from Renton Technical College’s one year Health &
Fitness Technologist Certificate Program. I went on the next year to get my AA in
Health & Fitness. I have been certified as a personal trainer, both water and land, taken
courses from the Arthritis Foundation and am certified by the Aquatic Exercise
Association. I am also a certified lifeguard.
As of January 2007, 23 hours of my week will be dedicated to water aerobics, both deep
and shallow. For the past six years I have been teaching at a variety of fitness facilities
including the Bellevue Club, Sammamish Club, Mercer Island Country Club as well as at
RTC.
Years ago I attended a seminar where the instructor was describing her opinion of the two
types of water aerobic instructors there were: the first words out of her mouth were
“commando style”. I don’t remember the other style because I wasn’t listening. I was so
thrilled I wasn’t the only one. What does this translate to? I tend to yell a lot. (I raised
two boys….what can I say?) Not at anyone in particular, just to the group as a whole.
You may get sick of me telling you to hold your stomach in and stand up straight,
squeeze your bottom, run just a teeny bit faster, jump just a tad bit higher…..over and
over and over again. But that’s what I do. Sometimes I do it louder than other times. I
actually care that if you are there to get a good workout, you do. Also, it is important to
me you know what muscle or muscle group you are working, including your heart. Why
do an exercise that has no purpose? If you are aware of the point you can focus and
possibly make the movement even more beneficial.
