Protist Kingdom
Characteristics:
Eukaryotic
Usually unicelluar
Motile - can move using flagella, cilia or pseudopods
Some autotrophic, some heterotrophic
Reproduction – usually asexual
Three different types:
Plant - like
Animal - like
Fungus - like
Animal-like protists Examples:
Heterotrophic
Amoebas
Reproduce by binary fission (asexual reproduction)
Pseudopods - false feet--- engulf their food
 Paramecium
Fine hair-like projections for movement (cilia)
Reproduction is usually asexual but they can sometimes conjugate (swap
genetic material)
Plant like protists
Photosynthetic
Most are unicellular, a few are multicellular

Phytoplankton - responsible for most of the world’s
oxygen
Euglena
For movement 
(flagella)
Have eyespots to sense the light…..so they can swim towards the light (for
Photosynthesis to make their own food)
Diatoms
Shells made of silica. When they die, they form deposits on ocean floor.
Used on abrasives, such as in toothpaste
Algae
They can be multicellular
What we think of as seaweed
Over 7,000 different species
“Red Tide” is caused by a type of algae that produces toxins, kills
fish, contaminates shellfish and can make people sick
Fungus like protists
Heterotrophic - they absorb their food from the outside
Decomposers - like true fungus
Slime molds
Can live independently as cells but have ability to gather and move
like one in a mass
They do this to find a good area in which to release spores for
reproduction
Summary questions
1. Fill out the following table describing the characteristics of protists:
Prokaryotic or eukaryotic?
Autotrophic or heterotrophic?
Motile or sessile?
Asexual or sexual reproduction?
Unicellular or multicellular?
2. What are the three groups of protists? Give an example of each
3. Name three ways protists can move
4. What is the main difference between the protist kingdom and bacteria?
