Aim # 6: How do some\ plants and animals pass on their genes to their offspring sexually? Mini-Lesson Notes: *Sexual Reproduction: when 2 sex cells come together to make a new genetically different organism *Fertilization: joining of female eggs and male sperm sex cells *Zygote: the cell that is formed by fertilization Meiosis Zygote Mitosis Name: Date: CIS 339, Class ____ Science- Ms. Sowin Class Work # 6- Sexual Reproduction Directions: Scroll down and read the questions first to help guide your reading. Then read the passage and answer the following state questions in full sentences! This class work will help you on your state ELA & Science exams! Most animals and plants reproduce by sexual reproduction. Sexual reproduction requires two parents whose genetic material is combined in the offspring. Due to meiosis, each sex cell contains half the genetic information for the new individual. The female parent produces sex cells called eggs. The male parent produces sex cells called sperm. The male and female sex cells join together during fertilization. The resulting cell is called a zygote. Because the zygote contains genetic material from each parent, it is a totally new cell with its own genetic makeup. One advantage of sexual reproduction is that it creates individuals with a new combination of genes- half from each parent, keeping the population diverse and more likely to survive in changing conditions. In some plants, sexual reproduction involves flowers. Flowers are made of specialized leaves that form petals, and male and female reproductive organs. The stamen produce grains of pollen containing male sex cells- sperm. Wind, insects, or animals carry pollen to the stigma. A pollen tube, called a style, grows to the ovary which have ovules that produce female sex cells- eggs. The pollen travels down the style to the ovary, which contains eggs where fertilization takes place. 1. What are female and male sex cells called? Female : Eggs Male : Sperm 2. What results from fertilization? A zygote is the results of fertilization 3. Hypothesize what would happen in an orchard if no bees or other insects lived in the area. Ther will be lss flowers because bees pollinate to make More flowers grow 4. How is reproduction in most plants similar to reproduction in most animals? Most plants and animals reproduce by sexual reproductoin 5. Where does sexual reproduction take place in plants? (a) flowers (b) leaf cuttings (c) horizontal stems (d) roots My answer to # 5 is letter…A.Flower 6. Which organism reproduces both sexually and asexually? (a) goldfish (b) black bear (c) strawberry plant (d) rattlesnake My answer to # 6 is letter… C. Strawberry Plant 7. Which of the following occurs during sexual reproduction? (a) Both parents split in half (b) Only one parent splits in half (c) An egg joins with a zygote (d) An egg cell joins with a sperm cell My answer to # 7 is letter …. D. An egg cell joins with a Sperm Cell DON’T FORGET TO UPLOAD THIS TO YOUR WIKISPACE PAGE!
