I.
Bacterial anatomy
A. Cell Wall = not like that of a plant
1. Gram +  have typical cell wall
- stain purple
2. Gram -  have an extra lipid layer
-
stain red
-
are more antibiotic resistant
B. Capsule = protects the bacteria and allows it to stick
C. Cell (plasma) membrane = holds the interior of cell
D. Pili – short extension of the cell membrane that help the cell attach(Velcro)
E. Flagella = “tail” that allows the cell to move
F. Hyaloplasm = fluid inner portion of the cell
1. nucleoid = area with the DNA (no nucleus)
2. plasmid = short, linear strand of DNA
3. ribosomes = allow the bacterium to make protein
