Reading Guide 04 - Biology 160 - Essential Biology, 4th Ed. (Simon, Reece, Dickey)
Am I Really What I Eat?
DUE: Wednesday, Jan 12, 2011
Be prepared to discuss with your group
Read: Understanding Normal and Clinical Nutrition, by Rolfes et al. (1 page, see attached)
What you will learn in this reading guide: What happens to the biological molecules that make up our food’s
cellular structures once we eat them?
1) Fill out the following table:
Digestive Process
Carbohydrates
Lipids
Proteins
Nucleic acids (give
it your best guess)
Ingestion (mouth)
Digestion (mouth,
stomach, small
intestine)
Absorption and
Circulation (small
intestine)
Elimination (large
intestine, rectum)
2) Critical Thinking: On a separate sheet of paper, sketch out your ideas of how you think one of the food
items on your group’s menu starts as food and eventually is used by your cells. Be sure to include cellular
structures, water and macromolecules, pH, enzymes, covalent bonds, hydrogen bonds, hydrolysis, and
dehydration reactions. Ask yourself, what information do I still need to know?
