Test Key
Place the following parts in order from 1-9 that food moves through your
gastrointestinal tract and briefly describe the function of each part.
__5__ Pancreas : The pancreas produces digestive enzymes which are activated when
released in the small intestine and bicarbonate solution to neutralize the stomach
chyme.
__4__ Stomach : Digestion and storage of food. Digestive acids and enzymes are
released and peristalsis further grinds up the bolus
__3__ Pharynx/ Esophagus : The bolus travels down the esophagus by peristalsis
__6__ Liver : The liver produces bile (breaks down fats)
__2__ Salivary Glands : The salivary glands release amylase into the mouth which
start digesting starches
__8__ Small Intestine : The small intestine is where the majority of the food is
digested and where nutrients are absorbed.
__7__ Gall Bladder : The gallbladder stores bile that is released when undigested fats
enter the small intestine.
__1__ Mouth : Food enters through the mouth and is broken down into a bolus by
chewing
__9__ Large Intestine : Stores fecal matter until defecation
