HISTOLOGY OF LARGE INTESTINE
LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
At the end of the lecture the student should be able to:

To define large intestine, different parts of large intestine.

To describe the general plan of histology of large intestine.

To differentiate b/w different parts of large intestine with characteristics histological
differences.
Lecture outline:
It starts from ceacum and ends at the lower end of rectum.
It is more dilated than the small intestine.
Its length is about 1.5 meters.
Large intestine is divided into three segments, the colon, rectum and anal canal.
Colon:
1-Mucosa
2-Submucosa
3-Muscularis externa
4-Serosa/Adventia
1-Mucosa
a.Epithelium
b.LaminaPropria
c.Muscularis Mucosae
2-Submucosa
3-Muscularis externa
4-Serosa/Adventia
Appendices Epiploicae
Appendix:
It is the appendage of ceacum.
Walls are continuous with ceacum.
Walls are made up of same four coats.
Lumen is very irregular due to folding of mucosa.
Wall of Appendix:
Rectum
It is 12~18 cm in length.
Structurally identical to colon.
It is retroperitoneal so covered by adventia only.
