What Happened? Cont.
• 1891- Queen Liliuokalani opposes political reform.
• 1898- Spanish-American War gives Hawaii new opporitunites of
activity in the Pacific-Hawaii area. McKinley negotiates a new
annexation treaty, which is held up by anti-imperialists in the Senate.
• July 7- The Congress votes to annex Hawaii. Mckinley approved.
• June 14, 1900- Hawaii becomes U.S. territory.
What Happened?
• The islands of Hawaii had been important way stations for American
ships in China’s trade since the early nineteenth century.
• 1842- Secretary of State, Daniel Webster recognizes importance of
Hawaii for the United States. The U.S. makes no attempt to annex
Hawaii.
• 1849- U.S. recognizes Hawaiian independence and talks about
annexation.
• 1875- U.S. signs a reciprocity trade treaty with Hawaii which admits
Hawaiian sugar to the U.S. duty free.
• 1890- The Mckinley Tariff ends the favorable sugar trade for Hawaii
which resulted in large losses for American planters.
Motives
• Warm climate
• Valuable crops like sugar and fruit.
• Important for trade ports.
Justifications
• It was a good midpoint between America
and China.
• America wanted to expand their population
into Hawaiian territory.
Reaction of Population
• People of Hawaii were not happy about the
idea of Annexation by the United States.
• January 5, 1895- an armed revolt was an
attempt to stop the Annexation.
• Between September and October 1897 two
groups collected petition signatures at public
meetings in hopes of U.S. realizing Hawaii
opposed Annexation.
• 21,269 out of 39,000 Hawaiians opposed.
Final Result
• Hawaii did not become a state until 1959
when racial attitudes and party politics
differed state hood until bipartisan
compromise linked Hawaii and Alaska.
